North Carolina heroine saves passenger train
A 34 year old mountain woman Nannie Gibson saved a derailed passenger train near Asheville. She calmed passengers, helped organize, and later chose to forgo personal reward to educate herself. Southern Railway offered to fund college and a path to an education at Asheville College, while she ensured her family’s welfare and adopted a simpler life on a farm with her father.
