Gogebic 4H Club members win honors at U P State Fair
Gogebic county 4H club girls June Johnson from Ironwood and Taimie Uitto from Erwin township earned top marks in the Home Economics Achievement Booth at the U P State Fair. Seven winners were chosen from the Upper Peninsula, with Johnson and Uitto earning trips to Michigan State College Kellogg Company Fort Dearborn and other southern state ports next summer. Sixty five Gogebic 4H members exhibited in forestry canning food preparation clothing handicraft garden potato and dairy work at Ishpeming this week.

Gogebic County 4 H Fair Plans September Show
Gogebic County 4 H Club outlines a three day fair from September 1 to 3 with a August 31 cattle poultry pig garden forestry and food preparation exhibits. Prizes will reward best club and individual displays while a 4 H Service Club booth will offer refreshments. The event features garden onion beet carrot cabbage and swish chard entries plus a forestry exhibit and 50 potato club members preparing displays. Special attractions include a milking contest a group singing contest and an achievement booth contest assessing members experience influence overall exhibit and display.

The County 4 H Service Club held its regular meeting at Mrs Theodora Johnson home. New initiates include Rose Castle Jennie Dudra Lempi Sullin Lloyd Leppanen Mildred Brozzo Dixie Salo Miriam Tasava and Jeanette Kevern. The next meeting is August 29 at 7 30 at Mrs Johnsons home to discuss the County 4-H Club Fair and plan. Plans for the fifth annual Upper Peninsula Potato Hay and Grain Show at Stephenson October 23 24 26 were outlined by secretary treasurer D L Clanahan. Premiums are set for potatoes hay and grain with contests for 4-H and Smith-Hughes students and a Junior Premier Grower prize including a trip to Chicago. Queens to represent counties will be selected by September 15 at Stephenson with show judges and Michigan Standard Grades sorting contests. The district show covers Upper Peninsula counties. state show follows Farmers Week at Michigan State College in February. The aim is standardizing varieties to aid the industry with no entry fees, minimal expenses, and premiums funded by show income.

State to Enforce Head Tax Collection in Michigan
Michigan state welfare officials instructed Gogebic County clerk John Luxmore and all county clerks to provide certified lists of delinquents who have not paid the old age pension head tax. The tax, $3.50 per resident 21 and over, was due December 1, 1932, with penalties delayed. enforcement now proceeds as the moratoriums on other taxes expire.

Socialist To Address U P Teachers Convention in Escanaba
Norman Thomas head of the Socialist party will speak at the Upper Peninsula district Michigan Education Association convention in Escanaba October 4 and 6. Sessions include state aid debates led by R E H Cheney and M R Keyworth, retirement funds, tenure, salaries, a banquet, and a Friday morning business meeting with group discussions on schools and parent-teacher groups. Concrete Opens New Six Mile Route On Highway 18
The concrete stretch between Byer's turn west of Iron River and Beechwood opened to the public last week carrying through traffic. The old highway remains a county secondary road due to local activity. The Fox River Valley Construction Co built the new six mile link, which bypasses three railroad crossings and trims over a mile of distance from the old route.

Must Clear Highway Of All Hazards To Driving
Four railroads petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to extend a year of experimentally reduced fares in the upper peninsula.
