City assessment rolls show total value of 6,079,305 up from 6,543,885 last year, an increase of 536,420. Mining properties account for 4,800,000 of the mines plus 1,279,300 for other city property, with Oliver Iron Mining and Newport Mining among the top taxpayers. The surge in mining valuations is expected to cut rates for other taxpayers and reflects strong labor relations with mining firms.

Officer Arrested in Ironwood Assault Case
Patrolman Jos. Thomas, a recent Ironwood police recruit, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging assault with intent to murder. He was arraigned before Judge Shea with $1,000 bail and suspended by Marshal Frank. The incident stemmed from a street altercation Tuesday night in which Urquhart was shot in the hand during a confrontation as the officer tried to arrest him.

Taft constrained by 1854 treaty on liquor sales in Michigan UP
A Washington report notes that an 1854 treaty restrains the president from allowing liquor sales in the western half of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area west of the Bacanaba and Chocolay rivers was ceded to the United States with a stipulation that intoxicants be controlled by the president. The president has not acted, though current Minnesota turmoil highlights the issue, and Indian Affairs warned subordinates to halt liquor sales and close saloons in a broad Minnesota region by Sept 25 unless Congress orders otherwise.

Four Men Sentenced in Oliver Mining Assault Case
In Virginia Minnesota Pete Jovanovich Steve Borobaoc Wid Worlklon and Peter Donovich pleaded guilty to assaulting Oliver Mining police officer Harry Wilcox on April 24. Jovanovich got five years in the penitentiary while the other three received two and a half years each. Wilcox survived severe injuries after weeks in a hospital. D I Foley Oliver company police chief and deputies rounded up all involved within a week. Also noted are teacher examinations for Gogebic County to be held August 11 and 12 in the Bessemer courthouse with sessions starting at 8:30.
