A traveling observer notes plentiful potato crops with yields reaching over a hundred bushels per acre. Farmers haul wagonloads to markets and ship eight carloads weekly, estimating receipts near 8000 bushels. The crop is profitable, and some observers speculate on using potatoes for alcohol production.
Garrett De Groot, deaf and mute son of Mr. and Mrs. H De Groot of near Sioux Center, left home Sunday with a horse and two wheeled cart. A search failed to locate him. Maple Lawn Stock Farm owned by P W Moir near Maurice showed six top draft stallions at the Sioux County Fair, including Childbert the state winner and multiple prizes.
Mrs. Vander Brak of Maurice broke her leg above the ankle when a runaway horse spooked her buggy on a Sunday west of town. Dr Oggel treated and reduced the fracture. she is progressing as well as could be expected. Nearby notes mention visits and work in Alcester Le Mars Orange City Sioux City and shipments of hogs to Sioux City.
Judge Hutchinson fixed January 21 1907 as naturalization day under the new law. Applicants must file with the clerk ninety days prior. The first day of each term of court will be naturalization day unless within thirty days of a general election. Those seeking citizenship should hurry to be included.
Northwestern bank President W S Short of Orange City outlines a scheme to insure bank deposits to restore depositor confidence. He argues many keep money in unsafe places and proposes a company funded by banks to insure deposits, similar to burglar and building insurance, with banks covering costs.
M P Van Oosterhout editor of de Vrije Holland er died at his Orange City home after brief illness. He helped settle Sioux County with Dutch immigrants, built a fortune of about 200000, and led in politics. Survived by widow and four children, his funeral drew large crowds of old settlers.
Prof. Gearhart will inaugurate Maurice lecture course with "Footprints of the Centuries" on October 24. The program is strong this year and managed by Redpath. Satterlee & Peshles advertise carpets, rugs, matting, linoleum, lace curtains, and window shades in Maurice.
