The State University of Iowa announces its largest ever summer journalism program for 1950 running June 14 to August 9. The School of Journalism offers 38 courses including nine new ones for undergraduates graduates teachers and English and education students seeking working knowledge of journalism processes.
The Quill and Scroll honor society includes 77 Iowa chapters representing over 30 000 members nationwide. The Iowa directory lists chapter members for 1949 50, compiled under Prof Edward Mason of the Iowa State University School of Journalism. Trustees include George Gallup and Bruce Gould, with Gallup noted as founder.
About 300 Iowa high school journalists and teachers attend the Iowa High School Press association convention October 6 and 7 on Drake University campus Des Moines. Mrs Gardner Cowles Jr editor of Flair magazine will speak with sessions on production and journalism tasks. Contests in news editorial feature sports and ad writing are planned with leaders from Des Moines Press and Radio club Drake faculty and state universities.
Kenneth Stratton describes Iowa high school journalism curricula and the role of national organizations. He notes the 1948 DPI bulletin shaping a one semester course and highlights the Quill and Scroll Society as a key national body fostering student newspapers and standards.
The Ida Grove senior class stage production, One Foot in Heaven, draws on Hartzell Spence's novel. Spence, alumnus of the State University of Town School of Journalism, wrote of his father a Methodist minister rebuilding a church in a 1910 Iowa town. He spoke at SUI in 1949 and authored Get Thee Behind Me.
The Daily Iowan trains students through real assignments on news writing reporting and editing. Alumni such as Richard Wilson Ken Mac Donald George Gallup Beatrice Gould Bruce Gould and Hartzell Spence exemplify the field. The paper offers city beat work desk roles photography and advertising experience with AP wirephotos and national circulation ideas.
The Iowa High School Journalism directory lists 499 schools with publications including newspapers annuals and magazines. Newspapers are in 457 schools, an annual in 358, and magazines in 14. Waterloo leads with six papers across two high schools, Davenport and Des Moines each have four, and Linwood has 12 students in its smallest school.
Radio training grows with WSUI and KSUI facilities at SUI. The two stations provide newsroom and announcer experience for journalism and speech majors without selling commercial time, offering practical training since the war era.
