Gas leak causes minor fire in Le Mars district

Meridith Implement and Le Mars workers faced a gas leak when a valve remained on after pipe work. A lighted safety lantern ignited escaping gas, causing a small blaze that was extinguished by the fire department using carbon dioxide after initial attempts with other methods. No pipe damage occurred. work will resume once water drained from the area.

Herschel Akers of Medicine Row Wyoming was arrested Saturday night at Sieverding Walz Hardware for stealing a fishing reel from the display. The reel valued at 14 dollars led to a charge of petty larceny and a thirty day jail sentence was imposed.

Forged-Check Suspect Captured at Marcus

Sheriff Frank Scholer says F A Murphy alias W O Leary was arrested at Marcus Thursday evening. Murphy, 69, had been wanted in Plymouth County since 1948 for forging about 10 checks in Remsen, Kingsley, and Le Mars. He claimed Hawarden origins but couldn’t be verified. he is held in the county jail.

Former Resident Mary Grunke Dies in Dubuque

Mary Grunke, 85, a former Le Mars resident, died Thursday June 19 at St. Anthony's Home Dubuque after a two year stay. Born May 2 1862 in Germany she came to Plymouth County in 1801 and lived 45 years here. Funeral at St Catherine's church June 21 with Father Kathoff officiating. interment in St Catherine's cemetery. Survived by sons Fred Jander Sioux City and Paul Jander Rapid City SD. two grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband William Grunke in 1989.

Half Mile New Terraces on Muecke Farm Near Hinton

On the Walter Muecke farm five miles east of Hinton, about a half mile of new terraces were built this spring. Muecke has previously constructed terraces as part of his conservation program. Terraces reduce soil and moisture loss on sloping fields by breaking long slopes, slowing runoff, and allowing water to soak into the soil for storage and later use during dry months.

Police Court Bond List For Local Offenses

Names of men appeared before Mayor Chris Miller on charges including reckless driving and speeding with fines from 5 to 100 dollars plus costs.
