Miss Lois Nelle daughter of Mr and Mrs E F Nelle won first in the Mezzo-Soprano division at the Chicago Music Land festival held August 19 She also placed fourth overall among women and earlier earned a paid trip at the Minneapolis Aquatennial on July 25 The Nelles accompanied Lois to Chicago and returned to Le Mars Monday evening
Carl D. Paulson, U S Navy Recruiter, said volunteer enlistments remain high with an unlimited quota. The Navy seeks Naval Reserve volunteers for one year active duty to bridge pay and manpower gaps. Recruits will receive full pay and allowances and be sent to San Francisco for assignment after acceptance.
A fragment describes draft age youths receiving pre-induction notices from the draft board and losing the chance to volunteer for the Navy. Those given pre-induction notices must be drafted prior to receipt of the notice to serve, making voluntary enlistment unavailable after notice.
The county clerk’s office in LeMars reports two couples applying for marriage licenses this week. Walter Macklem and Bonnie Jean McLain of Sioux City Iowa, and Ervin Staab and Fern M Miller of Remsen Iowa are listed as applicants.
Henry Eliott and Miss Christine Petersen county superintendent of schools attended a Special Education Conference in Sioux City on Wednesday August 23. Elliott, recently appointed supervisor of Special Education for disabled children in Sioux and Plymouth counties, heard speakers from the Division of Special Education at the State Department of Public Instruction in Des Moines. The sessions covered services for visually and physically handicapped children as well as those with speech or hearing defects.
Terry Lee Mavrose age 15 months and Kathy Huckle age 3 years were crowned King and Queen of Toyland in a Catholic Daughters of America baby contest. Each received a six inch gold plated loving cup. Winners chosen by popular vote with pennies placed around Le Mars fostering community participation. funds raised benefited the sponsoring organization.
Charles A. McCoun a former Kingsley resident aged 82 died in Los Angeles after a short illness. The remains were brought to Kingsley where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon.
Charles McCoun, born April 10, 1868 in Crescent City Iowa, died August 9 1950 in Los Angeles after a year of serious illness. He lived in Kingsley for years in real estate and drayage, later retiring. Surviving are daughters Mrs Mane Cameron Los Angeles and Mrs Frank Kelly Omaha nine grandchildren eight great grandchildren.
Le Mars Fire Department responded to Rev. Clawson at 600 1st Ave South East Wednesday at 9 35 AM. A prior Sunday call to the same house occurred. No damage reported from either incident, both chimney fires, smoke triggered the alarms.

Probate notice states on August 14 1950 the District Court of Plymouth County Iowa appointed John Hartmann and Martin Croon as administrators of the estate of Will U Hartmann deceased.
