A gazette notice from Warsaw declares martial law across Russian Poland and names ten temporary military governors general, as the governor general’s proclamation expands control. The action comes amid ongoing tensions and affects the region including Warsaw.
James H. Eckles president of the Commercial National Bank and clearing house committee says a surplus of more than 7 million dollars will remain after the liabilities of the three John R. Walsh banks are paid.
John N. Irwin died today in Hot Springs Arkansas. The former minister to Portugal served as Governor of Arizona and Idaho and as mayor of Keokuk. Bells tolled across the city upon news of his death.
M Schuppert of this city has rented the front store room once used by Parsons and Stouffer and after February 1 will operate a grocery. A bakery will also be conducted under the same management. Local friends express pleasure at the announcement.
The Misses Elsa and Bessie Baxter from the Citizen's force were seven words behind Mrs. J. E. Selzenstein wife of the Daily Press city editor in a word building contest for a Sunier and Son piano. Mrs. Reizenstein won by a very small margin. Mr. and Mrs. Elton Rice plan a holiday visit to Massillon Ohio to stay with Mrs. Rice's parents Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Plam. Mrs. C. D. Bennison leaves for Independence to spend the holidays and Bennison will join after the holiday rush.
The city library and postoffice will be closed Christmas Day under holiday rules. Banks and the courthouse will also close with adjournment tomorrow. the district court will reopen next Tuesday morning.
Officers from Illinois arrive to reclaim Richard Scott who was recently adjudged insane by the county Commissioners. He has been in Sheriff Rowland's custody since the decision.
Frank Jiros sues J H Schmidt on a promissory note and the jury returns a verdict for Jiros late this afternoon. The case began yesterday and reached the jury by 12:30 p.m. today.
Prof Seashore left today for Boston to attend three conventions over the next few days and return around January 4. He will present papers at the American Association of Philosophy and the American Psychological Society before the directors of American laboratories meeting, detailing his laboratory investigations.
The executive committee of the state university board of regents met for their regular monthly session with Parker Holbrook Abernathy and Judge Walter Babbi among those present. The meeting ran long with little to report as of press time.
Police detained a resident of Iowa county who began cleaning a rest room and appeared insane or intoxicated. He was later deemed to be suffering from a premature holiday celebration and jailed. Invitations announce the forthcoming marriage of Chas L Lewis of Pleasant Valley township to Miss Alta Johnston of Fremont township. The ceremony will be at the bride’s parents home, Mr. and Mrs Geo Johnson, at High Soon on Wednesday December 27. The groom is a son of ex Supervisor and Mrs J W Miller. they will establish a home in Pleasant Valley township and begin housekeeping at once.
Last Wednesday night in West Liberty the marriage of Amber Hindee to Andrew McClintosh occurred at the home of Mr and Mrs R B Hindee. Andrew McClintosh hails from LeMars and the couple are to reside there.

Nicholas Oakes, longtime Iowa City brick and tile businessman and Johnson county resident, dies at 77 after two months illness. Survived by wife Mary and five sons including John and Perry Oakes. Funeral at 421 East Court Street Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. D. W. Wolfe. burial in Oakland Cemetery. Born September 29, 1829 in Baden Germany, he came to America with his parents in 1830, grew up in Ohio, moved to Iowa in 1855, and retired from active duties in 1903 leaving the firm to his sons. He was a faithful Presbyterian and active Republican.
