Washington December 6 unanimous consent given for consideration of the Panama canal bill authorizing sixteen and a half million dollars in funding. Mrs Berry reported captured after being stifled in a case tied to the proceeding.
Mrs Berry held town officials at bay from her fort in a railroad coach toilet room since Friday. She was removed today after fumes from ammonia saturated rags pushed through the window. Before surrendering she fired one shot but was not hurt.
A survey party including Mia Dvorsky and two other women was overturned on a fifteen foot drop on Burlington Street after a horse owned by Hopkins backed the surrey into a ditch. The team collapsed but the occupants escaped with injuries described as minor despite the surfacing danger.
Reported trial details cite Matt Maher facing murder related charges in the death of John Kelley. Court allows use of corrected copy of an indictment while key witnesses Gerber boys reaffirm their testimony. Weather delays noted as proceedings continue with cold conditions impacting the courtroom atmosphere.

Mr and Mrs W H Swafford have left for Winterset with Mr Swafford to return soon.
The Methodist church members plan a new group called the Brotherhood of St Paul. Already supported by strong local sentiment, the charter will close in a week, with about fifty members to begin. Meetings will be held monthly at members' homes focusing on literature, social, and religious activities.
Prof. C. E. Seashore will present the evening paper for the Baconian Club meeting in the physics hall on Friday night December 8 at 7 30. The talk is titled Color Vision in the Indirect Field and promises a scholarly discussion.
Mayor Ball this morning received five days at hard labor after two men charged with assault and battery appeared in court. One man’s prominent black eye supported the charge as the altercation occurred in an alley off Dubuque street Tuesday evening. Also noted: baby boy born to Mr and Mrs J A Harrison on Clark street. A local notice asks parents to inform if their sons should be kept out of certain businesses. The case of H. B. Watters versus Roy A. Cook was dismissed today without prejudice at the plaintiff's costs. Other dismissals at the plaintiff's costs include C. L. Eby versus Mary E.B. Scott et al., Joseph Shebetka versus John Novak Jr. et al., and Minnie Belknap versus Horace Belknap. The Thomas Baldwin versus Samuel and Amos Reynolds garnishees case was stricken from the docket as settled.
Judge Jackson of Muscatine overruled the contestants motion for a new trial in the Heath will contest. No opinion is filed. The case will likely go to the Supreme Court with thirty days to file a bill of exceptions.
Johnson County Supervisors authorize chairman to sign contract with United States Standard Voting Machine Company for half interest in five machines for Iowa City city use at the Spring election. Total price 3200 dollars, to be shared equally with the city per prior agreement. State law enables use of voting machines in elections and provides for experimental and gradual adoption by counties and cities.
Three men pleaded guilty this week in the district court to crimes charged under indictments. Chas Williams confessed to setting fire to his cot. James Morgan admitted stealing a bolt of silk from a local dry goods store. Rawin Smith faces charges of conducting a gambling business on the fair grounds. Smith was fined and costs by Judge Byington. Williams and Morgan await sentencing, with Walter Ablerhasky also to be sentenced unless a motion for a new trial is filed.
About 225 guests enjoyed a dinner at the Armory served by St. Wenceslas church. With 250 tickets still available the organizers expect larger attendance at the evening supper. Ladies pledge a memorable meal for all comers.
F E Ayers traveled to West Liberty on business this afternoon. Mrs John Matthas is improving after a long illness. Athletic Union board of control will hold their regular meeting this evening. J H Clark of Coralville is slightly better but still critically ill. A new railing is being installed at the city hall to give the mayor more privacy.
Mrs A W Starbuck and Miss Maude Hostetler fell through ice while skating above Coralville dam. Rescued by bystanders after ice gave way, they clung to a plank and were pulled to shore. They were warmed and dried, with no serious injuries noted.
