The Congregational church will dedicate its new building on Sunday August 24 with morning afternoon and evening services and a basket lunch at the church. Morning preaching at the Christian church will be omitted so members may join the ceremony. Special music will be provided and all are invited.
Rev Wallace Jones leads the Pioneers for boys ages 12 to 15 with Vernon Warner as president. Enrollment stands at 7 with next meeting set for August 23. Updates note illness of Mrs Lewin Frederickson and family visits, plus local travel and a new bridge project on Arcade Street. Lexington School opens Sept with Fred Kelley as principal and a teaching staff listed by grade. Engelman Hardware notes Lang Ranges in stock.
District Manager Walter A. Mitchell of Kerr-Gifford outlines the 1924 wheat production for Morrow and Gilliam counties in Oregon and part of Klickitat county in Washington. The marketable yield is about 600,000 sacks or one and one third million bushels, roughly 30 percent of last year, with seed and feed reserves deducted. Figures are in sacks. 1923 was an especially good year.
Crop Report notes Mr and Mrs W E Bullard left Sunday for Portland to stay through Buyer's Week and return Saturday. The Arlington Bullets-print correction adds missed shipments by the Independent Warehouse in Ione. Ernest Myers returned to Salem after attending his brother Eugene Myers funeral in lone.
The Ione school plans to open September 1st this year with about the previous attendance. All contracts are signed and the teaching staff for the coming year includes J Clifton Tucker, Alfred A Craigant, Gertrude McIntyre, Portia Kidwell, Earl A thrown, Vera J Webster, and others for high school and elementary grades.
Eugene Myers aged 71 died August 15 at the home of his daughter Mrs Frank Young in Jane after an apoplectic stroke four weeks earlier. A pioneer of Oregon he settled in 1860 and survived an 1860 emigrant train attack in which his uncle and most adults were killed.
Mr and Mrs Moreland and their son Clay traveled from Monmouth to attend the funeral of Mrs Morelands father Eugene Myers arriving Saturday and returning Monday. Mrs Clay Moreland had been visiting in the home of Mrs Frank Young. E Padberg and three children Pearl Hazel and Derrill went to Portland for dental work and bond business for Farmers Elevator Co and Jordan elevator. Pearl Padberg stayed in Portland to work in the Meier and Franks drug department before returning with the others.
We thank friends and neighbors for kindness during illness and death of our father and brother. Gratitude for flowers and support from Mr. and Mrs. Frank Young and Mrs. Frank Moreland, Herbert W. Myers, Ernest L. Myers.
Ex service men advised of Reed Johnson act passed June 7 1924. U S Veterans Hospital care for honorable discharge sick veterans since 1897. Restrictions include priority for greatest financial need and no home treatment or at home inspections.
Miss McIntyre and Misa Kid well plan to teach at the Ione school which opens September 8. Mrs Sam Ganger is ill this week with a nervous breakdown under doctor care. Lost horse: a brown 1200 lb mare branded Diamonds on right shoulder with $10 reward offered by L E Stites Hermiston Oregon. Mr I R Robison and Loran Hale trip to Portland for several days. Mr Sam Ganger left Friday for Portland on vacation. Mr and Mrs F M McConnell arrived from Long Beach California for a week visiting friends and relatives. Inquire of Mrs Carson at the telephone office.
A. F. Andrews clarifies the Defense Day Test to the public, stating it is an educational enrollment to visualize initial mobilization steps, not a mobilization or obligation for service. It emphasizes democracy, preparedness, and avoids militaristic implications. Citizens are urged to participate or attend a service on September 12, 1924.
Mrs. M. Johnson of Portland visits her son Bert Johnson at a farm near Ione. Fred Smith arrives from Portland Tuesday and is employed as Chef at the Hotel Ione. Pay cash at Mason's to save money on purchases.
