Iola coach lauds fourth at SEK meet in Fort Scott

Iola High School coach Doc Stiles praised the squad after a fourth-place finish at the SEK Championship. Fort Scott led with 63 points, Altamont 39, while Iola, bolstered by several runner ups and school records, edged Chanute and others in a deep field.

Fishing conditions reported across Kansas reservoirs

The State Forestry Fish and Game commission released fishing reports for Kansas lakes and reservoirs. Conditions range from clear to turbid with varied suitability for bass crappie channel catfish walleye and bluegill across sites including Turtle Creek Pomona Council Grove Osage County Lake John Redmond Lake Shawnee and many county and city lakes.

Inner tube race on Neosho River attracts nine college entrants

An innertube race will be run down the Neosho River starting below the dam at Iola bridge at noon today. Racers from nine area colleges debut in the Iola version of the sport. The course ends at Chanute and results will be known later today.

Iola Junior High Ponies Tie for Fourth in JHL Meet

Iola Junior High Ponies placed fourth in the JHL league meet at Independence. Coffeyville led with 74% of points, followed by Chanute, Independence, Iola, and Parsons. In B division, Iola finished fifth as Coffeyville won the championship. Canfield and Coblentz led field events, Roark placed in relays, and Iola took fifth in 880, 440, and medley relays.

Humboldt school records fall in Tri-Valley League meet

Humboldt High set two school marks as Lynn Seyfert cleared six feet three quarters in high jump and Bob Clements clocked 20.1 in 180 yard low hurdles. Honeycutt topped 6-0 earlier, while other Humboldt results included Wood 122-4 in discus and several relays finishing fourth or third in the Tri-Valley League standings. Team totals show Fredonia 89, Neodeska 67, Garnett 40, Humboldt 29, Yates Center 23.

Close Qualifies for National JC Track Championship

Ron Close of Allen County Community Junior College hurdler qualified for the National Junior College Track and Field Championship with a 56.8 in the intermediate hurdles at the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division meet. He is the second Red Devil to reach the national meet, following miler Doug Shreves who ran 4:27.5 at the Fort Scott Relays.
