A Christmas scene depicts shepherds watching flocks on a hill when a bright star appears in the sky. They are guided to leave their fields and follow the star to an extraordinary destination, recalling the nativity narrative.
The General Land Office suspends entry in several townships within Black Hills National Forest and notes Forest Service will still list and survey homestead entries by metes and bounds. Other items include a church notice, travel notes, a birth, visits, illness, and an estray report for two cows branded WA or LT with UH left side, from Hulett Wyoming.
Public lands within T57N R69W will be filed at the Sundance land office on January 28 1918 at 9 00 AM. A bay horse branded N on the left shoulder is offered as a reward for information. Gust Frolander of Alzada Montana reports social and local notices as Hulett residents gather for an assembly in honor of Frank Chaffin who leaves for Arizona then may ranch in Crook County. Local updates include L Powell returning from a Montana ranch with farm implements Mrs Youman welcoming Mr and Mrs Burwell visiting her daughter and A W Storm and son Wesley departing for Omaha on a combined pleasure and business trip.
A Christmas night gathering at the Chet Wood home drew about seventy five Crook county residents and a few Coloradoans. The square dance filled the evening with lively fun and a grand supper. Charles Chittim led the way by taking out a war saving certificate at Hulett, and J J Hanhber advertised Barred Plymouth Rock breeding cockerels for sale. Johan Hillard, recent visitor to Ulmets, owns a Rocky Point ranch and runs a well drilling outfit in summer. Jim Brown barely saved a colt when ice broke on the river, requiring one colt’s head to be kept above water while horses were unhitched.
