A bustling Indiana state fair opens with crowds near the 1929 attendance record as cattle and livestock judging, horse shows, a dog show, and midway attractions draw thousands. Four bands and radio broadcasts accompany an $8,000 harness race and Hawaiian Nights fireworks planned for tonight, with American Legion day highlighted for veterans tomorrow.
New Orleans report says a Negro convict's death becomes a campaign issue in Louisiana's Democratic senatorial primary. Governor Huey P. Long named as co defendant in a 25,000 damages suit filed by the widow of Curtiss Riley, the 19 year old victim shot on a rice farm. The petition accuses Long of backing the convict lease system and links him to the death.
A huge pre-Spanish pyramid buried under Vera Cruz forest was found about fifty miles south of Tampico. Photos show a well preserved stone faced structure with primitively carved idols at its base. Eduardo Noguera of archaeology will inspect the site after a Vera Cruz congressman reported and sent photos to the education minister.
St Louis and Pittsburgh played in a baseball game with early innings and final score details. St Louis trailed but rallied with late runs while Pittsburgh struggled defensively as Swetonic, French and others worked on mound and in the field. The summary notes pitching by Rhem and Wilson for St Louis and Swetonic for Pittsburgh.

Fear of mob violence grips South Bend as officers guard all twenty four schools while investigators pursue leads in the Margerine Appel murder case. Police say a suspect, George Caine, is denying ties to the slaying as detectives return from Indianapolis. The child's mother transported the body to Gallatin, Tennessee for burial.
George Caine 32 of South Bend a telephone lineman is held on $5,000 bond after an alleged assault on his 14 year old stepdaughter. Indianapolis police say he had no connection with the Margerine Appel kidnapping and murder case. He was arrested near Fifty-second street and Sunset avenue after reportedly attacking the girl who was hospitalized. He faces first degree criminal assault charges.
The Marion county grand jury will convene Tuesday to resume probes halted by summer vacation. Harold Herbert Schroeder, a Mobile Alabama businessman, is said to be up for first consideration in the High School road auto pyre murder mystery. The Profintern announces its new executive committee including William Z. Foster and an American Negro named Ford.
United Press reports Antwerp police detained New York gangster Jack Legs Diamond on arrival by the S S Bergenland. He was not arrested but kept at the station awaiting Brussels instructions and possible deportation as an undesirable alien. Diamond claimed educational travel and planned to go to Liege.

In the Ilse district south of Canon City a hail storm helped residents cut ice costs. Sam Gillen butchered a calf it in hailstones to preserve it.

Eight killed and twenty five injured when seven coaches of the Texas Special, a St. Louis and San Francisco line train, derailed after rocks were placed on the track near Osage Hill station fifteen miles west of St. Louis. Passengers in rear cars unaware, rescue led by P. W. Connolley. Dead include engine crew C. E. Ray and E. T. White. Unverified reports said youths may have placed the rocks.

Dumont post of the Grand Army of the Republic launches a drive to have Shelby county raise 500 dollars for a Civil War memorial. The post treasurer says about 200 dollars is on hand to beautify the grounds around the memorial. Sons of Veterans and Spanish-American War veterans groups back the effort.
Dieudonne Coste and Maurice Bellonte launched from Le Bourget in the Question Mark heading toward New York in a nonstop Atlantic flight. Weather was favorable, fuel carried for about 52 hours, with plans to use a Great Circle route and possibly extend toward the United States. Coste hoped to unfurl flags over the Statue of Liberty and Bellonte’s wife anticipated observing the flight from New York.
