Celia Mitchell, a seventeen year old in Baltimore, travels to New York to meet her wealthy father John Mitchell and his social circle led by Evelyn Parsons. A party at Evelyn’s home exposes Celia’s strained loyalty and a night ride with Ted Jordan triggers her father’s anger. Celia endures tears, maternal letters, and a backstory of romance as Evelyn plots to shape Celia’s future, while Celia seeks to regain her father’s trust and navigate class tensions.
