Community Fund campaign runs November 9 to 19 with a stated goal of 781800, up from 722800 last year. President Hugh McK Landon notes last year’s total 726126 and a year-end debt of 11500, mainly from Family Welfare Society relief during illness and unemployment. Twenty three agencies expect higher funding in 1929.
Thomas Cheesman pleads guilty after being reminded of a prior drunkenness record. The Municipal Judge Pro Tem, Charles Karabell, notes Cheesman, 60, of 12 N East St, previously fined $10 and costs in November 1926 for drunkenness. Cheesman protests, saying he has never been drunk before.
The Hoovers-for-Hoover Club will recruit Hoover family members in Marion County under Mrs. Russell T. McFall. Charles B. Hoover, 79, is named chairman and Raymond S. Hoover, first voter, is secretary. About 300 Hoovers are registered voters. Headquarters will be in county Hoover rooms at the English Hotel.
Indianapolis will mark Discovery Day with city hall and statehouse closings while county courts stay open. National stock markets will be closed though Indianapolis banks remain open. Stock yards will operate as usual. Knights of Columbus and Italian societies plan programs during the observance.
United Press reports Senator Charles Curtis, in St Paul, disregards a letter from Dr. J. W. Reynolds demanding an apology after a heckler in Spencer, Iowa challenged his speech. Curtis called the heckler “too damned dumb to understand him” and will not respond.
An old Times Want Ad notes 9 buyers sought an electric washer. The ad mentions a 1900 Cataract washer offered at $50, with ten responses. Riley invites others to place an ad to sell their washer.
Frank Clarkson aged 84 of 901 E Georgia Street suffered a broken leg when a wagon driven by Clara Silcox of 519 Abbott Street bumped into his wagon during wood unloading at 1316 English Avenue. He was taken to city hospital.
State Tax Board members and city officials met to discuss a proposed school city tax levy of 1.03 dollars. The dispute pitted William Book of the civic affairs committee against Albert F. Walsman, business manager for the Indianapolis school board. No decision was reached at noon recess.
Charles A. Levine’s monoplane Columbia rose from Roosevelt Field and landed heavily at Curtiss Field, unable to gain altitude. Roger Q. Williams and navigator Pietro Bonelli were aboard. No injuries reported, but damage will delay the crossing attempt for several days. Bonelli says the plan is to resume the flight to Rome once repairs are complete.
Submarine Ondine with three officers and thirty nine men is overdue at Bizerta a Tunisian port in Northern Africa after being due Wednesday the marine ministry announced.
Weather officials forecast a sharp cold wave reaching the area Friday afternoon or night after a warm October day. The temperature reached 85 degrees by 1 p.m. today, with the late fall record of 88 degrees set in 1897 on October 8 and 87 on October 15. The mercury is expected to fall to about 40 degrees Friday night.
In Prague Czechoslovakia seven-story building collapse leaves thirty dead or missing. Searchers race to reach seven men trapped by debris as a coded message reading I see light is heard from inside. Local temperatures logged through the morning show warming trends.
Governor Alfred E. Smith tours Virginia on a Democratic campaign swing. Crowds mobbed the governor at Richmond station while police struggled to control the scene. Smith waved his derby as he rode on open cars, with Byrd and state officials present and Confederate veterans in attendance. The reception paused downtown commerce as multiple stops were planned through North Carolina.
John W. Davis the Democratic presidential nominee four years ago will speak at a rally in South Bend. The event is set for Tuesday night October 23, as announced by the State Democratic headquarters today.
In New Lexington Ohio on Oct 11 the charred bodies of fifteen prisoners burned in a fire at the State Prison brick plant dormitory at Junction City near here were buried in a common grave. Guards took the names of mourning relatives present as twenty prisoners remained missing. Bodies could not be identified and warden P E Thomas planned to list any.absent men as probable escapes if relatives did not attend.
Through a misty dawn the Graf Zeppelin began its long flight to the United States from Friedrichshafen with 60 aboard including several Americans. The airship, praised as the most luxurious yet, carried canary mascots, flowers, and a strong crew led by Dr. Hugo Eckener. Passengers include Charles E. Rosendahl and Count Brandenstein Zeppelin. insurance costs for the voyage were cited as 9 percent.
Supreme Court heard argument on whether a June 11 1924 guilty plea for possession of a still could be followed by sentencing only on December 6 1925. The defendant Joe Varish Gary received one to five years in Indiana State Prison after a year and a half delay. Hershman argued judge lost jurisdiction. Gause noted official continuances kept the matter alive.
United Press reports Capt A W Stevens and Capt St Clair Streett, army aviators, encountered a throttled airplane after reaching 40,200 feet. They could not descend until fuel ran out, landing with a dead stick near Rushville Indiana. Officials expect final altitude to be about 37,500 feet after bureau of standards check. The VCO-5 has been used in several altitude flights.
The Graf Zeppelin, length 770.8 feet and height 100 feet, carries 40 crew and up to 50 passengers on longer flights. With five Maybach-Zep engines, it reaches 68.3 mph traveling speed and about 80.7 mph maximum. Funded by Germans and subsidies, it offers a dining saloon, card tables, gramophones, and a kitchen. Passengers paid $3,000 each. liquor is onboard with 62,000 letters and parcels prepared for U.S. delivery, and alcohol will be stored after crossing the three-mile limit.
Roland Stewart, a man tied to an airplane bootlegging case, had a suspended reformatory sentence delayed by Judge James A. Collins until after his trial on a new liquor law charge. Bond set at 2000 dollars. he has been jailed since Monday. A chase through the northern business district led to the arrest. a pint of whisky and a bottle of wine were found in the car. The car did not belong to Stewart. he was previously sentenced March 19 to one to two years on liquor violations.
Paterson New Jersey October 11 Hundreds of additional silk workers were expected to join the strike today affecting 130 silk mills in the city as part of a union action.
David Shannon, 56, fatally shot himself at noon in the bedroom of his 1630 Central Ave residence. Records show he stood before a mirror with a reflector in his left hand and fired a .32 caliber pistol through his left temple. Mrs May Shannon says he had recently complained of severe headaches and feared losing his mind. he is survived by his widow and two sons.
Paris Oct 11 The Graf Zeppelin continues toward the United States but routes and weather force detours. From Friedrichshafen the 770 foot airship shifts toward the Rhone Valley and Mediterranean options while her 4 776 mile original course could extend to 5 272 miles. At best about seventy seven hours from Germany to New York, arrival expected Sunday morning. The Los Angeles 1924 flight is used for comparison.
