Summer Begins As Earth Reaches Cancer In June
Scientists at the Nautical Almanac office say summer starts June 21 at 11 07 a m EST as the sun reaches Cancer and the Tropic of Cancer. The season hinges on Earth's tilt of 23 l/2 degrees, not the sun, with winter following six months later as the north pole tilts away. In the southern hemisphere the seasons are opposite.
