Nassak Diamond Tax Ruling Sets Duty at Fifty Thousand
The United States Court of Customs Appeals ruled the Nassak diamond a precious stone not an artistic antiquity, subjecting it to a 50 000 dollar duty or 20 percent of value. The decision overruled a New York customs court ruling that the stone could enter duty free. The gem, once eighty nine carats and linked to Shiva worship, has graced display in New York since 1927 amid fears it could be recut for competition.
