Reports from St Louis indicate Delphine Love and Charles Cohn reportedly wed in Jeffersonville Indiana after a telephone arranged promise. Love later claimed it was a whim and denied the marriage while Cohn says he will pursue a Louisville divorce, alleging lack of full mental capacity.
Sept 28 General Lawton met informally with General Garcia at Garcia's home in Santiago to discuss restoring order in Cuba. Garcia praised American policy, suggested tweaks to Lawton plans, and disavowed any bid for Cuban presidency.
A servant at 2308 Broadway near Twenty third Street, Katie O Flaherty, was seized by a bicycle patrolman after allegedly choking a baby. Neighbors and the Eaglesfield family described her as insane. She was taken to police headquarters and later released after a commission deemed her sane.
Martin Curley died at his home 421 B New York St Tuesday night after a year and a half of illness. He was 74 and born in Ireland who came to America in 1850 and lived in Rushville Cambridge City before moving to Indianapolis in 1884. He worked for 20 years for the Pennsylvania Railroad, whose yardmaster son Hugh Curley is named along with other children Anna Margaret Celia and May. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at St church.
A special excursion train collided with a coal train between Westville and Stellarton on the Pictou branch of the Intercolonial railway. Five people died including engineers James Sproul and Michael O'Brien and firemen W G Henderson and J R Mclkenzie, plus passenger Martin McDonald. Dozens injured as two trains met on a sharp curve due to misread orders.
Secretary of State W D Owen predicts fiat money will be the dominant future issue in U S politics. He says the money question will dominate campaigns within ten days and that two major parties will form around fiat money versus intrinsic value. He notes tariff and war as other key concerns and cites populist currents shaping the 19th century political landscape.
New York September 28 Corbett and McCoy clashed in the Gilsey House corridor on Broadway. McCoy claimed Corbett feared a ring match and the two sparred with lefts and rights, crowds gathering as friends separated them. Both left unscathed, they planned a Buffalo bout on October 15.
The Marion county populists held a Tuesday convention in Greenwood and did not nominate a congressional candidate. They seek promises of places from Bailey and Taggart before endorsing him, while Bailey and Taggart deny such overtures. The group postponed endorsement until after the Democratic legislative convention, with factions arguing over fusion and justice of the peace and legislative seats.
In Athens Georgia near Gilbertsville during a Methodist revival two young farmers John Alsop and Wletcher Adams, who shared a pew and had a long standing grudge, clashed during prayer. Adams knocked Alsop down and began choking him when Alsop's brother Sam killed Adams by disemboweling and cutting out his heart. The sheriff arrested Sam, but he was later rescued by friends.
Richard H. Smith of Kokomo filed for bankruptcy with the federal court. His debts exceed 50 000 while assets are under 600. The 13th petition under the new law cites a 25 year debt buildup. Smith is a physician and former county medical society secretary.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity covers 36 hours ending 8 p m September 29. Warmer and fair weather expected Wednesday night and Thursday. Temperature recorded at 7 a m Wednesday was 56 degrees. Noon readings show a rise with improving conditions through the period.
John P. Russell, a police court arrestee linked to Chief Colbert, went to the grand jury on Wednesday charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. He allegedly posed as a Chicago firm agent to hire drivers and collectors, demanding a cash deposit while not representing any firm.
Undertaker Wiese found two postal cards in the pockets of A. W. Strong who hanged himself behind the polar ice houses Monday night. The notes threatened self harm due to speculation losses. A brother from Champaign arrived Wednesday and arranged to have the body sent to Raymond Station, Ohio.
The Houle Crystal Water Company of New Albany filed articles of incorporation with the secretary of state on Wednesday, capital stock $200000. The Gilt-edge Butter and Cheese Company of Vincennes also filed, with capital stock $6000.
