Captain Thaddus Babbidge from Camden Missouri sails aboard the bark Syra carrying the crew of the abandoned schooner William Smith rescued after 86 hours without food or water. The Smith was wrecked in a hurricane near Charleston after departing August 26. In New York, no news but Alya liner missing, Kingston Jamaica locals fear loss.
The Grand Army of the Republic senior department decision places Illinois first, dating from April 1, 1865, with Wisconsin second and Indiana third. The official committee, meeting in Monticeto, IL, Sept. 4, reached a unanimous verdict confirming Illinois as the senior department.
The Columbian catholic congress began at the Art Institute in Chicago with President Booney greeting attendees. Prince of Naples welcomed in Metz by workingmen. Pan American medical colleges convened in Washington. John J Ingalls of Kansas planned Senate and governor campaigns for 1898. French Catholic mission in China was sacked and priests driven out.

Fred Fields was arrested Sunday night by Constable Holmes on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. The plan involved buying a deer and presenting two mutilated five dollar bank notes from the State Bank of Tennessee to receive 1.95 in charge. Fields claims the bills were for a trick on friends. He appeared before Justice Habich Monday and was released on 500 dollar bond. Fields is from Nashville, Tennessee.
The coroner orders burial of a child who died Friday at the Jones baby farm on Millst. Constable Buimiey searches for the infant's mother who said she could be found at 22 Mississippi st but no such residents or number exist. The man Jones who arranged the reception of the child is not available.
Lonon reports a widower named Wall and his four children perished in a Monday morning fire at their Hammer smith shop. Smallpox cases discovered in New York at 186 Madison street, with five cases reported in one house. Dr A L Leatherman, NYU graduate, opened a modern medical office at 18 Meridian Street and plans to reside in Indianapolis.
