Copenhagen awaits the steam Hans Egede carrying Dr. Frederick A. Cook the American explorer who claimed polar feats. Officials fixed a 9 am Saturday reception time in honor of the discoverer as the vessel nears port. The event marks the first Glad Acclaim for the polar voyage.
New York reports President Taft will welcome Dr. Cook upon his Arctic voyage return. Arctic and Explorers clubs plan grand dinner where Cook may present data proving polar achievement. Invitations extended to Nansen Duke de Abruzzi Amundsen Greely Shackleton among others with possible stops in Copenhagen Christiana England and Norway.
London reports that Dr Frederick A Cook’s planned homecoming will spark a major scientific clash over his polar discovery claims. European and American scientists prepare to cross examine his data while presses vary in verdicts with The Times taking a critical stance.
Manchester dispatch says Dr. Cook's story of discovering the north pole is a complete hoax. Captain McKay, an Arctic and Antarctic veteran, urged keeping the claim out of papers. Whaling skippers in northern waters likewise mock the assertion.

Bertha Shaw a 21 year old daughter of a wealthy widow Ms F D Shaw of 1018 N State street and a Fairmont seminary student in Washington DC was found dead in her mother's residence from asphyxiation. The body was found partially disrobed on the floor by Mrs Dowdle during a visit from Iowa as police begin a rigid investigation.
L. W. Mikell a Pennsylvania railroad engineer, fatally injured near Spencer Indiana when two engines sideswiped during a yard switch. Both crews, confused by signaling, followed a brakeman and ran together. Mikell, leaning from a window, was struck and later died after transfer to St Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis. He lived at 3 Jefferson Avenue and was 67 years old.
Mrs Frederick A Cook, wife of the North Pole discoverer, expresses gratitude and hope that her husband returns safely. She fled to Lewiston with her children Ruth and Helen to escape reporters, thanking friends and awaiting news before returning to New York.
Mrs Elizabeth Kepp Cunningham 19, newly married, seeks her husband in Indianapolis after he allegedly stole $1000 from her, leaving her nearly destitute. Captain Manning aided her in finding work in a millinery shop while detectives investigate the sewing machine man. The romance began in Chicago and ended in a quick marriage after a waitress mishap.

SPRINGFIELD NL Sept 3 While eight men were at work on the foundation under the parsonage of the Catholic church at Ninopolis Ill the underpinning gave way and all were caught under heavy timbers. Farris Baldridge and Robert Johnson were instantly killed Shelby Stenner was fatally injured J S Simms Albert Garvey Roy Davis and Fred Gould were severely injured.
Ran Butler, a controversial figure in a Negro settlement near the tile works on West Sixteenth Street, escaped liquor law arrest after a Sunday basement brawl at his 462 W Fifteenth street saloon where a man was shot amid a crowd. Bartender Ben F Doyle was jailed and sent to the grand jury for shooting Charles Alexander in the neck, claims of self defense disputed by witnesses. Alexander and King Rice received ten days in the workhouse and a $20 fine.
A New Haven railroad float collided with the tug R. B. Little off Wheaton's Point near Hell Gate. Boilers exploded after the crash. One man was killed, another probably fatally injured, and a third reported missing. The incident occurred today in New York.
Public religious services will be held next Sunday at the Salvation Army Fresh Air Farm near New Augusta. The season ends Tuesday. Major Escott will preach with a musical program. Local support shown by residents and farmers through donations of produce and milk. Contributions may be sent to Major Escott in the Baldwin block.

Bliss Reed, a Black man, was discharged in police court after being arrested on a charge of taking a purse containing $7.50 from Mrs. Martha Slaughter. Reed testified he found the purse and sought its owner, claiming he asked a grocer about the money and found the purse on the street. Mrs Slaughter stated she left the purse on a grocery counter while using a telephone and returned to find it missing.
Chicago report says Cincinnati man known as Happy Jack Martin ran about the city pursued by a list of 54 acquaintances. Mrs Anna J Wagner claims he stole jewels worth 3500 from her and plans a wedding before any arrest. She traces his movements to Chicago as others offer to buy his affections.
