Eight Men Perish In Scranton Coal Slope Fire
In Scranton Pennsylvania on Saturday morning a fire trapped eight men in the Von Storch slope of the Delaware and Hudson coal company. Seven men and one boy died with three escaping. Rescue attempts were thwarted by smoke and a later cave-in. Additional casualties followed as four more victims were reported later that day. Bodies were recovered after 10 a.m. and officials warned that further delays could occur due to debris blocking access.

Otto Harkin, a 2-year-old boy living at 511 W Fourteenth Street, was struck by a car at the Fourteenth and West streets intersection about 10:30 Saturday morning. His left foot was amputated at the ankle at City Hospital after the injury. The accident occurred while he played in the street. the cause remains unclear. The operation, performed by Dr Ritter with the foot still in its shoe, was completed with notable steadiness by Otto and a second amputation at 2 PM Saturday by Dr Marsee in the presence of about 250 students.

Heating Cars With Electricity For Citizens' Lines
