New York report states Mrs. John Jacob Astor seeks separation with a referee to report. The case may grant alimony as property is divided, with Rhinebeck mansion not included. John Jacob Astor IV is away aboard a yacht near Cuba while the New York Fifth Avenue home remains with Col. Astor.
City detectives chase leads on four arson outrages as Commercial club and officials plan large rewards. Mayor and business leaders keep donor names secret while parties sharpen lines and weigh votes ahead of election day.
The United States court of appeals denied the government’s petition to jail John R. Walsh. The panel said no greater likelihood of flight exists now than before, but allowed constant surveillance. Walsh and his lawyers greeted the ruling and expect further action by the Supreme Court before incarceration.
E H Gary chairman of the United States Steel directors declares there is absolutely no truth in the Chicago report that Steel has purchased railroads controlled by John R Walsh. He says he has no idea if anyone else has taken over the roads and comments on the Walsh sale rumor.
Deputy Sheriff Sloan seized the grocery of Pharaoh H. Hill at 1320 N Senate Avenue on Thursday. J C Perry, a wholesale grocer, filed to possess the property claiming Hill owes him 1200.
Police report numerous Hallowe'en disturbances as celebrations start early. A 40 Dorman Street cement fence was toppled, windows on Massachusetts avenue damaged, sheds at 814 and 301 EB Maryland street and School No. 7 overturned, shutters and steps stolen in the northwest. A Cornell avenue family found a large double deck chicken coop in their yard Thursday morning.
Samuel Lee, a Black man, died Thursday morning at St. Vincent's hospital from injuries when a sand car loaded with wet sand fell on him. He worked for Moore-Mansfield Construction in a sewer job at Thirty eighth Street and Washington Boulevard. He resided at 11% N. Senate Avenue. Coroner Blackwell was notified.
Mrs. Mahala Richardson 62 a lifelong Indianapolis resident died at her home in the Chatham building at Massachusetts avenue and Walnut street. She was famed for kindness to the poor and lodge work. Survived by son Edward Richardson and two daughters Mrs. William Vilet and Miss Rille Richardson. Body to be taken to daughter Mrs. W Vilet at 2928 Broadway.
Bicycle policemen Mullin and Stewart captured two burglars and will be given a salute of honor by Capt. Wallace Foster. The presentation of silk flags will occur at roll call at police headquarters Thursday night.
Benjamin Teegarden, 36, was badly burned on hands and feet when attempting to start a coal oil fire in his cooking stove at 322 Indiana Avenue. An explosion spread burning fluid. Police Officer Hunter assisted and firefighters extinguished the blaze causing about $50 in damage.
Claud Andrews, who betrayed Jesse Coe, the man who killed Patrolman Charles Russell, was sent to the work house for 18 days on Thursday morning from police court. He was charged with striking another man on the head with a hatchet and was described as Coe’s cousin who lured him to the spot where Kentucky sheriffs shot him.
Mme Marcella Sembrich receives strong applause in Caleb Mills hall on a Wednesday evening. She repeats several numbers with Frank La Forge and Francis Rogers. The Maennerchor chorus complements the performance, and Sembrich commends their excellence before departing.
Tokio reports the prince Ito assassination is tied to an Indiant Antean who once ran a Southeast Asian newspaper. He confessed to joining 19 others in a pact to kill Ito, as authorities gather details.
William Cardwell and Michael Foley were wounded and captured after a fierce revolver battle. Edward Lee 5 identified Cardwell as a man met on a freight train in Indianapolis. Foley is named as the third man. Police link rings found on Foley to a home on Baltimore Avenue. Mayor Bookwalter and Chief Metzger praised the officers and urged reward.
In circuit court Thursday a large number of character witnesses testified for Joseph H. C. Denman. Names include Charles A. Bales Charles F. Murphy J. W. Folger J. S. Farrell M. L. Clawson W. H. Ogborn Bente B. Cohen T. J. Moll and A. F. Shafer. They vouched for Denman’s honesty while allegations of defrauding Frankie McCrady of over a thousand dollars were noted. Denman claimed no final settlement and that McCrady owes him money.
Dr. H. R. Allen sues in probate court for 2500 dollars for surgical services to Samuel Prendler who was struck by a streetcar July 15 1998. Prendler suffered severe injuries before a self inflicted shotgun shot ended his life leaving an estate around 10000 dollars.
The writer accuses the Indianapolis News of bias in the mayoral race, alleging it favors Gauss and Shank with brewer influence. He asserts his own Democratic loyalty and counters the paper’s claims while denying requests or favors from Gauss. He notes past support for Governor Marshall and criticizes the paper’s tactics and editors.
