New York October 25 Frank Farrell known as the poolroom king won about 100000 on his horse Blues at Morris Park Thursday. After the race Farrell bet 25000 of his winnings against 20000 by a bookmaker that Edward M. Shepard would be the next mayor of New York.
C. Peters of Zionsville was robbed of 21 dollars Thursday night by Mamie Price a colored woman who hugged him from behind and took the money. Price was fined 25 dollars and given 90 days in police court on Friday.
The Indiana Supreme Court holds a sleeping car porter is not a passenger and cannot recover damages for negligence. Ambrose Russell, a sleeping car employee, was injured when a train door broke his arm while not a passenger. The court says a special contract between Pullman and the railroad can release liability for negligence.
F M Herron the jeweler who installed and serviced the clock for ten years says the clock is not worn out and only needs regular oiling. He notes the bell weighs 4009 pounds and suggests keeping the tower open for proper ventilation and maintenance.
Mrs Anne Edson Taylor a 50 year old Bay City Michigan schoolteacher who went over Niagara Falls in a specially made barrel reported no serious injuries Friday aside from muscle soreness a scalp wound and a one and a half inch gash She was rescued just below the falls and said she would not attempt the stunt again though she does not regret it if it helps her financially
The rush to fill remaining mayoral posts continues with discussions over the Board of Health. A visiting group urged appointing a doctor unaffiliated with Indiana or Central medical colleges. Dr Bull's Syrup is advertised as easing throat irritation and bronchial symptoms.
Thomas Moran known as Senator, 19, previously given a suspended highway robbery sentence, had suspension revoked and will serve one to three years at Jeffersonville reformatory. He and another youth allegedly aided in spending about 10 while Tim Nurse received 60 days in police court. Minnie Jacobs, 13, told Nurse where the money was.
Samuel C. Dawson and his wife Bessie appear as plaintiff and defendant in a divorce suit filed Friday. The couple previously faced troubles, with Mrs. Dawson requesting divorce earlier before withdrawal. Married June 1901, Dawson recounts alleged curses croton oil in water livery barn assault with corn ear and threats to kill with scissors.
In Kendallville Indiana Mr and Mrs B E Smith found a baby in a basket at their door Tuesday morning and kept it. A man and woman later claimed the child saying the baby was hers and that it had been kidnapped and they drove away toward Waterloo.
Al Wright colored was jailed Thursday night on charges of stealing two bicycles from Dr Nebras of Illinois S R and Walter Benermann and pawning them. The case was postponed Friday in police court to await more evidence.
Irish citizens of Indianapolis plan a Monday evening meeting at the Occidental hotel to decide whether to invite Redmond McHugh and O'Donnell, Irish members of parliament visiting the country to deliver addresses in the city.
A massive blaze at Hunt Wilkinson & Co at 1219 21 Market st in Philadelphia Friday morning killed at least nineteen people and injured about thirty as workers leaped from upper floors. The fire spread to Ivins Dietz Magee carpet warehouse and the Wendig hotel while Wanamaker’s store was protected by its own fire brigade.
In Chicago on Thursday two boys under 15 fought to death. Harry Himmelford, 11, crippled, was stabbed with a wire by David Bernstein, 13, who says he acted in self defense. Bernstein stood by bystanders as the crowd gathered and the body was lifted. Both youths had long feuds in the ghetto district marked by knives and guns.
The Park Board and Attorney General Taylor spar over a ruling to plant trees in front of his property. The board claims power to mandate planting while legal reading suggests no explicit authority, testing may follow if pursued.
Decatur Illinois October 25 A boiler on a Wabash engine exploded at Knight's station killing Fireman Tom Evers and Brakeman Holland. Engineer Donnelly was injured. The engine wrecked and freight cars and track debris lay scattered with victims recovered from the debris.
In Denver on October 25 a married hotel keeper from Lyons and Mrs Nellie Hardifer, wife of a Denver contractor, died or was dying after a joint act of self-destruction with morphine. They sought death to avoid disgrace and separation as their affair became known. The woman survived briefly. the man, 30, remained in critical condition at the county hospital. A Will Carleton poem was found in Hardifer’s hand.
City health authorities fear possible smallpox spread after the arrest of Sam Hagen on E Washington Street. He was seen in multiple stores and a saloon, though officials deny he worked in a saloon or cleaned out a grocery refrigerator. The grocery was fumigated and the grocer reports no fear of the disease.
The body of Frank House, a missing Big Four fireman of 776 s Thinois st, was recovered Thursday night from White river below the Belt bridge. He appears to have leaned from the bridge while crossing and suffered four skull fractures. The body lay in a 15 foot deep pool. Undertaker Beck will ship the remains Saturday to Wallonia, Jackson county.
Denver dispatch notes Hilda Thomas denies the rumor she owns the West Saratoga gold mine near Central City adjoining the Saratoga mine. She reportedly visited an assayer in Denver and discussed gold ore specimens, while fans and conmen mail her claims from coast to coast.
Bill Morris a Black man who assaulted Mrs. John Ball was captured on Thursday and burned at the stake in Balltown Louisiana in the customary southern method authorities reported the act as a mob extrajudicial punishment
Bettie Click, 15, is missing from her home at 1017 8S New Jersey Street. She left for school Thursday morning claiming sickness and has not been seen since. Her father J D Click called police for help and about $20 is missing from the house. The family cites a possible Washington D C link via a boyfriend, though the father declined further comment.

Detectives charged H. A. Rosebloom of 519 West Market street and Charles Hersey of 411 West Tenth street with holding up J. H. Crawford for 7 dollars and 50 cents on Court street Wednesday night. They face a police court hearing next Wednesday.
Fort Wayne reports a trial in which Chas Dunn faces murder charges in the death of Alice Cothrell. Witnesses reveal Dunn drank from the cistern during the missing girl’s case and prior visits to a neighbor’s well. The state alleges he killed the child in a barn and hid the body in sawdust before discarding it in the cistern.
A superior court jury awarded traveling man David J. Leathers 1300 in damages against Henry W. Lawrence and others for false imprisonment. Leathers alleges his arrest stemmed from a mistaken hotel identification after his sample case was stolen and used to beat a board bill at the Spencer House.
Admiral Schley testified about the allied bombardments and the May 27 dispatch delay, stating bombardments would have been useless against earthworks. He described observations near Santiago on May 29 and the discovery of Spanish ships in port, with the fleet maintaining a blockade afterward.

Dr Hiram W Thomas resigns from the People’s Church of Chicago after 21 years in ministry citing impaired health. The church accepts the resignation provisionally and two hours later invites Rev Frank Crane of Hyde Park Methodist Church to assume leadership. Thomas plans to devote remaining years to a national People’s Church movement.
