Katie Ferguson, 13, was burning leaves in the rear of her home on Saturday when a gust sent her dress into flames. Neighbors and a passerby offered aid but the crowd hesitated, until Mrs. Grace Taylor applied linseed oil to the burns. Dr. Carroll warned recovery is unlikely.
William A. Wickins of the Staite fee and salary commission sends circulars to county councils asking their view on proper compensation for county officers and needed deputies. Moses R. Alten of Jefferson Clinton county says councils can aid the commission and vice versa, urging inclusion of school superintendents surveyors assessors and other officials in reform notes.

About 9 cars will be built this winter, with 160 more for next season, employing 70 now and up to 130 later, using seasoned three year timber and a boxed front motorman layout to reduce loading confusion. A new power plant upgrade adds boilers, a large engine, and a generator, plus a rail switch to feed coal near furnaces. A parlor car styled like a railway palace car will be built after the rush.
An elderly colored man, thought to be Robert Ross, was found dead on the P and EK bridge over the White River near Kingan's after being crushed by a locomotive. Deputy city clerk Tamm reports his son August Tamm Jr was drugged by friends at Druggist Baron’s wedding in Phoenix hall last Wednesday. He was nearly unconscious and a carriage took him home. Next morning his gold watch and $1 were missing, with friends denying knowledge. Possible serious trouble for some in the crowd.
Judge Carter appears ready to annul the marriage of William A Foley and Marietta Foley. The bride, Miss Bremmerman, is awaiting finalized pleadings from both sides before the action can be legally completed. Mr Foley reportedly will not obtain bonds in the matter.

In Glencoe Natal on October 21 British forces led a eight hour assault up Talana Hill against Boer positions. The engagement, carried by Dublin Fusiliers King's Rifles Thirteenth and Sixty ninth rifles, resulted in British casualties at least 250 with several senior officers wounded or killed. Boers reportedly suffered zero. A Mafeking dispatch notes a dynamite truck ambush causing a large explosion and Boer deaths.
A train arrives at Jagersfontein with 70 wounded burghers while Boers in Cape Colony north of Kimberley join Orange Free State forces. They vow to capture Kimberley along with Rhodes and Jameson. An "Auntee" resigns. Henri Bourassa resigns as protest against Canada sending troops to South Africa.
