The Columbia edged the Yankee, breaking Shamrock’s top sail during Monday's triangular course at Highlands, with 10 to 6 odds in favor of Columbia on Tuesday. Crowds gathered along the shore as yachts and support craft moved through the race zone, while spectator turnout remained light compared to opening day.
The Shamrock crossed first with Columbia close behind in a foggy start. Capt Hogarth steered to windward as the Britisher extended a lead to about three boat lengths by 11 08. Shamrock’s top sail was damaged at 11 25 while trying to outrun Columbia.
Wind fouled Shamrock top sail causing it to lose the race while the Britisher tacked for home. Under the owners agreement if one boat is disabled the other must sail the course alone. Columbia rode a slight road jam at the second stake and moved toward a finish after 1:22 and 2:31.
The Columbia completed its run at 2 87 05 after a 2 36 p m finish, triggering a chorus of whistles from second rate excursion boats yachts and other craft that stirred the sailors aboard.
Highlands October 17. At 11 53 the Shamrock emerged from haze about a mile from Sandy Hook a nearly wrecked return. Racing hope and English prowess lie shattered with doubts on if the steel mast holds and whether the racer can compete Wednesday.
At 11:24 on October seventeenth the Shamrock yacht suffered a top mast failure during the Scripps-MN tug race. The top mast snapped 18 inches above the main mast, sending the top sail and gear crashing, while Columbia led five miles offshore. Crews cried out in shock as the rigging collapsed in a sudden gust.

Patrolman Ivan Deputy was acquitted by Justice Smock on an alleged assault charge against Warren Woodard. The Masonic grand chapter of Indiana met in the Masonic temple at 2 p.m. Tuesday with 13 delegates and planned sessions through Wednesday noon. John W. Pottinger read the grand master’s report. Winchester council charter suspended for reports and dues. Grand treasurer’s receipts totaled 164.94 and a balance of 1499.34. grand recorder noted net member gain of 118 in the year ending Jan 1, 1899, with 2928 current members. The grand council elected officers late Tuesday afternoon.
Labor commissioner Jl McCormack returns from Logansport where Kress Bros firm refused arbitration after signaling willingness. The firm pressed workers to sign a weekly 5 cent guarantee for two weeks and to quit the labor union, actions McCormack deems violations of the law.
About 100 paper manufactories join a new consolidation including wood pulp board paper pulp board and strawboard makers. About 60 million dollars are involved and all paper mills will be invited to join. The matter rests with a committee.
Senator Beveridge pressed President McKinley for Gen. Lawton to succeed Gen. Shafter as brigadier general in the regular army. Beveridge and Fairbanks telegraphed the president from Washington and Indiana officials plan further messages and letters to back Lawton’s claim.
John Shipley stole a horse, a keg of beer, and a watch chain during a parade of the Taggart partisan. The democratic nominee for police judge sent the case to the grand jury. The theft occurred at Seller's farm with desicating company employees present, and a second warrant followed for the watch and chain theft.
At the Christian Endeavor Union meeting a communication was sent to the advisory board deploring long public school lessons on Sundays. The note claims choristers are compelled to study on Sunday, keeping many from attending church services.
Winter ends most park work with four Riverside Garfield and Military patrols withdrawn. Riverside construction firm keeps dam and roadway project alive while weather allows. Park engineer Power says about half the work is done and should finish before next June.

Central News dispatch reports 300 Boers and 18 British killed at Mafeking. British forces blow up the railroad bridge over the Orange River at Hopetown hindering Boer advance south. A Boer engineer corps with dynamite caused the action.
A shipment of 1.5 million dollars in gold dust arrived in Vancouver from the north aboard the Dinigo. The consignment, owned by the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the Alaska Commercial Company, was packed in 11 metal boxes. Reports also note four Americans at Pew Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, staking and working four copper claims. After proving up, S. Lichtenstadter of New York bought the claims for 100,000 dollars in cash, calling the property a second Anaconda.
