Paris October 17 Field Marshal Mack Mahon duke of Magenta died Tuesday morning after weeks of frail health. Born 1808 at Sully he rose to marshal in 1859 and earned the Duke of Magenta title. He led in Algeria and the Franco Prussian War where he was twice wounded and captured at Sed an after a long day of fighting. He served as president of the republic until 1879.

Count and Countess Blucher of Roumania were strolling at their Weitzow estate when a gardener attacked with a revolver. He wounded the countess and the count fatally, then killed himself.
The youth William Reed, accused of fatally striking Officer Barker, confessed his guilt and blamed liquor. Police traced him to his uncle Edward Boring’s home in Marion County and he was jailed in a tearful, penitent state.
