Monday morning W W Woollen ex city controller visited the court house basement and bade farewell to his clerks with tears. He thanked them and wished success as he left the office. He then departed for Chicago to attend the fair and will spend the winter in Monticello Florida or San Antonio Texas with his wife.
A committee to probe the alleged defalcation by Treasurer McBride will meet in Attorney Wishard’s office in this city on Saturday or Monday. McBride’s bookkeeper F D Macbeth will present a detailed account of his dealings with the order. Macbeth’s counsel son Dave predicts major developments, while the committee promises a partial report but offers few details.
In Oakland a 45 year old woman Mrs. Howard Lawrence survived a throat stricture after two silver tubes were fitted, one in the throat and another through the abdomen into the stomach. Food now passes via the stomach tube and she steadily recovers though swallowing remains impossible if the throat blockage persists.
Notre Dame Indiana October 16 friends and relatives of William Larkin of Eikader Ja report a missing professor who last was heard Sept 25 after paying a Chicago hotel bill. Pinkerton detectives are tracing him fearing foul play due to his money and absence.
A dispatch from Merion reports a suspicious case of vitrio loid evolving into a genuine smallpox case in Marion. Secretary Metcalf of the State board of health hurried to the town to establish quarantine and monitor the outbreak, with several more cases expected.
A Monday blaze at the Parkside hotel near the fair grounds in Cuicago killed W. Jackson by smoke inhalation. Fire officials reported the victim as the only known casualty and continue investigations into the cause of the fire.

Four highwaymen attempted a midnight hold up of a Calumet street car on 109th street. They battered Conductor Ed Kelly and aimed revolvers at Motorman James Gilman. Police sergeant Riley sighted them and they fled. Aunt Alleyers was captured. A report from Shelbyville claimed a man matching Wim Reed’s description in Bark er murder case was arrested there, but Chicago officials later ruled it a mistaken identity.
Oct 16 report of a Rock Island wreck west of here after two tramp riders on the mail car were crushed. Mail clerk E. E. Har ter of St. Joseph is likely fatally hurt and baggageman John Forsythe sustains serious injuries.

Coroner Beck announced the Mill-St. baby farm run by Mrs. Jones is to close. The case of the unknown infant who died there in September was ruled a death by inanition and neglect. A colored man named Jones claimed to be the child’s guardian. the mother, said to be from Martinsville, provided a fictitious Mississippi street address and remains unfound.
