Fire at County Children's Home in Belmont Ohio trapped three floors of young residents. Nurse Grace Green woke and carried twelve children to safety while others escaped with help as stair collapsed. total loss about 15000 dollars amid fierce flames.
David Higgins a Butterfield hotel porter was arrested by Litka police at Rochester police request. He is suspected in the Anna Schumacher murder in Holy Sepulchre cemetery Rochester on August 3. Higgins has been in Utica two days after the murder and is said to have come from Rochester.
George Dinwiddie Republican chairman for Indiana's Ninth district and the former Congressman Co B Landis were in Indianapolis visiting Republican leaders. A Landis ally said Landis unlikely to run again, while observers note Landis aims to field many candidates to split the convention and sway delegates at the last moment.
In a criminal court Friday Dora Pearl known as Teddy Bear charged Chip Lewis with assault. An aged negro witness testified I am her uncle by insurance, explaining he had taken life insurance on the young woman and named their relation as uncle by insurance. The jury found Lewis not guilty.
Mrs. Clarence Plumb sister of Robert SfcMurray a well known newspaper man says she cannot bury her brother. Coroner Blackwell notified her. McMurray a copy reader lately on a local paper complained of illness and refused a physician. Autopsy held to determine cause.

In police court, McDougall of Golden Hill was dismissed after Hack defended him. Other drivers faced delays or fines. several cases postponed. Patrolmen Saylor, Logan, Wooley and Hanks were assigned to monitor autos.
George Daniels a Rushville saloon keeper and hotel bartender was robbed of 600 dollars at the Imperial Turkish bath in the Imperial hotel Capito r Ohio streets Thursday night. He gave valuables to the attendant to lock in a box but the key was returned and the money disappeared Friday morning. The attendant, who had not locked the box, is missing and detectives were notified.
Merchant Policeman Buchanan halted a negro at Martindale avenue and Belt railroad at 5 AM Friday. The fugitive fled after shots were fired. a sack dropped contained four chickens and was sent to police headquarters. The man escaped.
South Bend Indiana outlines a week long celebration led by the Chamber of Commerce with citywide decorations. The schedule includes factory whistle blows, court of honor dedication, unique phonograph concerts, a marathon, motorcycle events, an automobile floral parade, illuminated fire department run, automobile races and drills, a civic pageant, a grand band concert, fireworks, and an airship as a free attraction to showcase regional development.

Jesse Hutchcraft, a negro head waiter at the Plaza apartments, was found not guilty of stealing a purse containing $7 from Ida Conley. His alleged misfortune began after meeting the Conley girl, leading to home trouble, a pursuit by his wife, and a later arrest warrant. The affair ended with the wife beating the girl and Hutchcraft unable to return the stolen money.
Harry Swango, photographed embracing another woman in Lexington, sent the picture to his wife in Indianapolis. He was found guilty of child desertion in Indianapolis criminal court. sentence withheld pending a new trial request. Swango reportedly had work in Indianapolis but none in Kentucky. Penalty for desertion ranges from one to three years.
James Lamkin, deputy city clerk, made his first appearance in police court Friday as an attorney and succeeded in getting the men he defended set free. Paul Shepherd and P J Mac Nulty were charged with loitering after being arrested near the Tacoma laundry with Fred Wickersham, who claimed to want laundry. It was shown Shepherd and McNulty did not try to enter the laundry, while Wickersham said he did. Wickersham was fined 25 dollars and costs and sentenced to three days in the workhouse.
Excessive use of two funds at Jeffersonville reformatory during Will Whittaker era caused year end deficits. Teachers in the school of letters and trades schools face salary shortages, with several awaiting legislative appropriations. No criminal liability, but educators plan to seek back pay and a remedies through lawmakers.
Mrs George Peak, thought dead in a blaze on W New York Street near White River, is missing. Firemen failed to find her body after neighbors reported seeing her inside minutes before the fire. Greenville Kentucky reports the balloon Indiana, which departed Indianapolis Thursday, crossed over Greenville Friday morning headed west. Buyer Henry D Pruden of Dayton Ohio, aged 6 and wealthy, bought the balloon from George L Bumbaugh to take an aerial trip for fun. Attendant H H McGill of Dayton joined in. Thursday evening the balloon anchor snagged in feed wires of the Indianapolis Columbus and Southern traction line near Columbus, breaking them and delaying traffic for hours.
The Model Shirt company of Indianapolis has increased its capital by issuing 80,000 dollars in preferred shares. It is understood that 90,000 dollars of the issue is to be put on the market to be sold at 11 1/2.
John Hopson a Negro of 410 East Raymond Street Indianapolis was shot and fatally wounded in Paragon Indiana Thursday night while attempting to break into the Indianapolis Southern station. Officers on guard had previously observed attempts at the station and investigated finding Hopson unfamiliar with the Raymond Street address.
