Record of 16 saved at sea earns medal for captain Morris

New York May 15 Captain Arthur Morris wore a Brazilian government gold medal when his ship The Tocantines, Lloyd-Brazil line, docked in Brooklyn. The medal honors rescuing sixteen Rio de Janeiro fishermen from a sinking smack on March 22, the second such rescue by the crew within a year. The episode began March 21 on the Tocantines bound for Rio with general merchandise. Chief Officer Ernest Cave spotted a man clinging to a plank after the ship’s crew heard a cry. Aboard the rescued castaways revealed there were sixteen men who had sailed from Rio six days earlier, their vessel wrecked by gales. The Tocantines saved the group and delivered them to Rio authorities before Morr is received the medal. In April 1909 the Tocantines rescued 25 men from the schooner George May near Norfolk. The ship later played a role in the Russo-Japanese War era, even being captured, then escaping from Port Arthur and Yokohama after setting fuel stores ablaze.
