In the wake of King Edward's death and political confusion the government halted leave of British officers in Egypt. Troops undergo constant field training to quell any disorder, while anxiety grows over native soldiers' loyalty amid possible insurrection.
In London on May 18 a pall of religious strife over the coronation oath grows fiercer as Britain mourns King Edward. Proposals to alter the oath surface while Parliament may act soon. King George appeals to unity, extending sympathy to Whitehaven miners, and stamp design is planned alongside new philatelic aims. Wages debate forms part of post funeral concerns.
Dr. James L. Holden of Columbus Ohio confirmed King Edward died of throat cancer. He examined the king last June and diagnosed throat cancer. An operation was deemed impossible due to the sore’s location and the king’s frail condition. The meeting with Dr. Holden was arranged through Mrs. William B. Leeds in Paris.
London May 13 General Sir John French inspector general of the army sailed Thursday for America. His object is to inspect the Canadian troops and to ascertain the progress of the new system of unified training established by the imperial conference at London.
Local citizens who took over the Indestructible Wheel Works at a receiver sale will begin manufacturing automobile trucks. The capital stock of the company has been increased from 15 000 to 50 000 dollars.
Washington May 13 Insurgent and regular Republicans claim victory as Senate battles over the administration’s program loom. The long and short haul amendments dominate the fight with leaders predicting a win when the chamber votes. Some plan a possible recess to delay the issue. Regulars claim an eight vote majority but concede defections by Smoot and others would be offset by coast state Democrats opposed to the inner party clause.

No decision yet on summoning Attorney General Wickham over the Lawler memorandum and related Glavis charges report to the president.

Bloomington Ind May 13 The Y M C A annual drive has raised 1681 of 3000 goal by noon Thursday. The campaign added 343 new members as workers met to report progress.
Benjamin Meyers of 424 Jefferson Avenue worked on Mayor Shank's home when he fell from the roof Friday morning and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to his own residence for care.
In a circuit court trial for Mamie Smith's $25,000 suit against the Society of the Good Shepherd attorney Addison C Harris alleged a forged letter was offered to prove handwriting. Prosecution attorney Young admitted the letter was not genuine. Harris blocked a similar claim about a prayer book date and pressed for admissibility while witnesses testified Mamie Smith claimed religious vows and a nun's habit. The case drew many onlookers as court officials struggled to maintain order.
Albert Sihm the county auditor estimated a $10 000 lump sum would cover primary expenses and the county council appropriated it in Marion County. On Friday a special session was held to seek $1 450 more for election costs including 700 for stationery and printing 150 for election commissioners 100 for the canvassing board and 500 for meals for poll workers in 138 precincts at 10 50 each. The council will decide the requests on Saturday and may withhold the funds unless proven necessary.

Paris May 12 French aviators plan a determined bid to prevent Louis Paulhan from winning the 40000 prize offered by the Aero Club De France for the Paris to Brussels flight of 250 miles. The contest lasts 14 months and requires the aircraft to carry one passenger besides the pilot. French pilots claim Paulhan has had enough honors and vow to deny him the prize.
A woman in Spencer Indiana recalls burning $80 hidden in a shoe after her husband sought funds for a bank and was found insolvent. She told of discovering the money while searching for shoes and lifting the burning shoe into the furnace, noting the loss could have made him rich.
