In New Casero Pennsylvania March 20, five masked burglars entered John McMillin's house near Watts Mills while he was away. They bound the hired man and three women, waited for McMillin, then bound him with his head against a wall and demanded his wealth. He was burned on the feet with hot coals but refused to reveal money. McMillin had just placed $1,000 in a bank the day prior.
War has begun in St. Louis over Sunday work with strict enforcement of the Sunday labor laws. Attorney Carl Unger for liquor dealers filed a warrant to arrest John Feullen, president of the Union Depot Railway, to stop Sunday construction. Dozens of warrants issued aim at all business lines as retaliation in the broader Sunday saloon conflict.
Muripran Mississippi March 20 A triple tragedy occurred at Kewanee Lauderdale county Tuesday afternoon. Ben and Allen Pringle two brothers and James Britton died. The Pringle brothers met Britton on a neighbor's farm and renewed an old quarrel. One brother shot Britton in the stomach fatally wounding him but the dying man instantly returned fire killing both brothers.
In Reaping Pennsylvania John Oswald returned home drunk and attacked his wife. His 14 year old son intervened and struck Oswald with a heavy stick in self defense, killing him. Oswald died ten minutes later. The boy was arrested but released after a coroner's jury ruled self defense.
Hannibal Taffe aged 73 died Tuesday afternoon in his room in the Catterson block. Born December 14, 1822 on the Waffe farm near Woodrail place, he was likely Marion county's oldest native. His wife died years ago. He leaves three children AL Taft, Florence Taffe stage name Jean Del May in New Orleans, and Mrs. Dr Co L Armington of Anderson.
The prison north directors met Tuesday to appoint Charles Harley of Delphi as warden with an 80000 dollar bond. He will seek bonds in Michigan City Monday, and if refused, a hot action is planned.
