Insurgents topple Cannon as House overrules chair
Washington March 17 insurgence Republicans and Democrats combined to reverse Speaker Cannon on a point of order the strongest blow yet to his dominance. The decisive roll call 163 to 111 followed a prior 153 to 121 vote as 42 insurgent Republicans joined Democrats against Cannon. The episode marks a turning point with several Republicans shifting away from the Danville leader. Speaker Cannon left the chamber in "mad clean through" defeat, his authority visibly eroded and his cigar banished from the scene. List of 42 insurgent Republicans included Kinkaid Lindbergh MecLaughlin Madison Martin Miller Morse Murdock Nelson Ames Cary Cooper Davidson Davis Dawson Fish Gardner Good Grouna Haugen Hayes Higgins Hinshaw Hollingsworth Howland Johnson Kendall Kopp Langley Lenroot Stevens Townsend Voletead Wilson Woods and others. A first major test of insurgent strength signals possible end of the Cannon era.
