In Greenfield Indiana the Beaupre case against Citizens street railroad nears a verdict after eight hours of arguments and clashes over misconduct claims. Attorneys traded bitter remarks as Beckett and others cracked under cross examination amid contradictory affidavits and late night search for a key witness. A verdict is anticipated Saturday.
Canton L Hare received a letter from County clerk James W W Fesler now in Cuba. He arrived in Havana last Wednesday and reports not more than twelve Americans remain in the city. He plans to move inland with a magazine artist and has visited the Vizcaya and the palace of the captain general. Residents doubt war will come despite Havana harbor being crowded with ships.
Deputy U S marshal Boyd returned from North Vernon with a revenue collector to search a country neighborhood seven miles distant for a distillery. The effort found no one engaged in distilling though locals suspected illegal liquor use. Drinkers reportedly buy liquor in North Vernon and transport it to the countryside. Years ago a secret distillery existed in the area.
The Catholic Record issues a green special edition with portraits of Wm. E. English Mayor Taggart and James H. Deery county president of the Ancient Order of Hiberians. Mary Chomel, daughter of the proprietor, did all the work on the issue.
Hibbard Slocomb of 626 N Pennsylvania St appeared in police court charged with grand larceny after detectives found ten silver spoons a pearl breastpin and a gold welch watch in his possession. He initially denied but later claimed the items were stolen from his own home amid a gambling spree. The case, to be tried Saturday, is under investigation by detectives Asch and Dugan.
Judge Allen dismisses the Millison divorce on motion after hearing evidence that both parties sought separations amid claims of marital strife. The petitioner, a known missionary, faced accusations of treating his wife poorly, while the wife allegedly disparaged him. the judge urged acceptance of the outcome and noted the difficulty of proving fault. Washington reports the death of Hon Blanch K Bruce register of the treasury in this city at 8 1 oclock Thursday morning. Bruce born a slave in 1841 in Virginia rose to Mississippi planter sheriff and tax collector then US senator 1875 81 and held treasury post under Hayes and recorder of deeds for DC under Harrison. McKinley recently appointed him register of the treasury.
George Gray was released from the workhouse at noon on Wednesday after 34 days for assault and battery. Vic was immediately rearrested on three charges including assault on Emma Shoemyer and drawing a weapon. A bicycle was reportedly sped away from D. J. Churchill. In police court the case was continued until Saturday. Burglars entered Grant Mornaday's home on 2018 N Senate Ave and took 8 cents from Ben Lingenfelter. Another burglary at Arthur W Brown's residence near North and Meridian occurred Thursday morning but the burglars fled when a woman screamed.
Baward Graham seeks a divorce from Beatrice, recounting alleged tyranny by his mother in law. He recalls a home visit turning tense after a guest labeled him a broken down sport during a dispute witnessed by his wife. Friday the county will decide if Jacob Greenman’s liquor license at 405 Massachusetts is renewed amid remonstrance alleging dissolute patrons and proximity to a school.
A runaway team owned by J. Q. Adams and driven by James Daniel collapsed at New Jersey and Market streets on a Wednesday evening. One horse struck its head on a curb and died instantly. The second horse, severely injured, was shot by police. Daniel was not injured.
City attorney Kern rules paving costs for College and Sutherland intersection are charged to Sutherland abutting owners.
