The State board of education will determine which subjects applicants for high school teaching licenses are examined on by a committee of Swain, Stone, and Study appointed Friday. Capt Curtis and many Battery A members met at the armory Thursday to talk over the reorgan ization. They expect a place for the battery in the new guard, though no assurance has been received. The battery is unanimous in its desire to join the reorganized force.
Washington March 10. War department orders call for the muster out of the 160th Indiana volunteer infantry now stationed at Matanzas Cuba. The regiment will be brought home as soon as possible and officially discharged at Savannah Georgia.
The brick portion of the old Reagan Bruce property between Central and Park avenues near Twenty third Street is torn down due to rotten masonry making it unsafe. The frame section remains to be rented. Built by William Reagan circa 1824 it served as a farmer stopping place and inn under George Bruce and later Joseph Bruce and wife Margaret now owners after tenants for 20 years.
All want the police offices as six trustees will be elected for the police pension fund. Mayor Taggart, County treasurer Schmidt, and Supt. Quigley serve ex officio while six more trustees come from the force. Campaigning is active with one patrolman boasting of his books and reports. The mayor presides and Schmidt is treasurer. Duties include increasing the fund, selecting investments, and judging aid eligibility.
Edgar Todd sued Western Union after a late dispatched telegram to Kokomo caused him to miss his father Owen W Todd's funeral. An appellate court upheld a $200 damages verdict, finding negligence by the telegraph company.
Cordelia Viau and Sam Parslow were executed at St Scholastique Quebec for the murder of Isadore Poirier. The woman, parish organist, displayed defiance as crowds of about 2000 gathered and police fired to control the mob. Both confessed and were hanged back to back on the same scaffold.
Louis Roeset, 22, one of the killers of farmer James C. Pitts, aged 80, at Stony Jill, was hanged Friday morning in New Jersey. Manshanda, who confessed, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The death sentence for Roeset was imposed four times amid a strenuous bid to save his life.
Johnson Franklin was hanged Friday morning in Glasgow Kentucky for killing his mother-in-law Hanna Bowles last September. He blamed her for his separation from his wife, and after getting drunk he shot through the kitchen window and killed her.
Syracuse dispatch reports Frank Sheldon, on trial for murdering his wife, hanged himself Friday morning in Auburn prison. The case had been proceeding when the tragedy occurred, preventing further court action on the murder charge.
Supt. Poucher denies Masters painters' claim that printing by union painters will raise city costs. He says bids were rejected by the Board of Health and that the hospital will complete the printing under the original specs for $70 less than the lowest bid. He adds more work will be done at about twice the rate, and with better quality, than a contract would have provided.

At South Street Baptist Church a council verdict deposed Rev. Frederick G Parish from the Baptist ministry with the church urged to withdraw fellowship. Parish won a narrow victory as the council report was rejected by a 6 to 62 vote but he claimed proof to clear him. A possible church split may lead to a suit for possession of church property.

Washington March 10 A change in command at Iloilo is set for March 27 due to the 64 year age limit. Gen Marcus Miller will retire from regular service with Col Thomas M Anderson to succeed him, marking the end of an era for operations in the islands.
War department dispatch reports transport Grant arriving at Manila on March 10. Maj Gen H W Lawton commands a force of 42 officers and 1,716 men from the Fourth Infantry and two Seven teenth infantry companies. Arizona and Newport sail for San Francisco, Arizona via Hong Kong and Newport via Nagasaki.
In Manila on Friday a band of insurgents uncovered building an embankment road 80 yards left of the regiment. A company of Kansas charged the natives and drove them back. Capt. Edward Smith of the regiment was wounded. Reports mention Col. Smith Tennessee, Conville Idaho, Sie tana, and other Kansas regiment men. details unclear from the damaged text.
Secretary Alger cabled Generals Otis and Brooke to recruit or enlist one battalion each of Filipinos and Cubans for United States army service. He also asked General Henry in Porto Rico whether to recruit a battalion there. No final decision on full companies versus filling ranks with natives. It is believed complete Cuban and Filipino companies will be enlisted with American officers.
New York dispatch says Rudyard Kipling shows rapid, satisfactory improvement. He slept through the night and his pulse and temperature near normal. The last bulletin was issued Saturday. Elsie, the child, is reported well. Kipling inquired about his daughter Thursday but received answers.
