Plucky Girls Holding Down Land Claims in Oklahoma

Miss Daisy led as Oklahoma’s first feminine homesteader after riding a cowcatcher to stake a claim near Waterloo along the Santa Fe line. By 1889 she secured a patent, later died in Chicago, and many women continue to hold claims in Beaver county. Fostering farming skill, Edith Nelson shipped cantaloupe seed to distributors, while Mrs. Sarah Holt sold broomcorn, and Miss Maude James tended thirty acres of cotton north of Morrison. Local clubs and strong women’s roles mark the era of persistent homesteading.
