Washington faced a crippling blizzard as Taft's inauguration proceeded in the senate chamber with limited outdoor ceremonies. Trains stalled, crowds gathered in a snowbound Capitol, and a rushed parade featured limited civilian participation while Taft and Roosevelt attended a scaled back ceremony.
Detectives Askin and Houser arrested C. M. Chakriviti a Hindoo clairvoyant at 371 Massachusetts avenue on grand larceny charges. He allegedly drained Mrs. Dora Newby of 190 dollars in installments after promising a $2 salary office position and good luck. The arrest follows a warrant based on the victim’s report and statements.
Four persons are known dead after a fierce New York harbor storm. Captain William Ferguson and his wife Mrs Marr Ferguson were among the drowned aboard the coal barge George H Bates. Two unidentified bodies washed ashore on Staten Island as a high sea threatens ships dragging anchors.
Mrs Mary Campbell 58 known to police as the woman with out a home was given shelter in police headquarters after every door she sought shelter at had been shut Wednesday night and Thursday.
In the Charles Forward case against the Indianapolis Heat and Light Co. for 20000 dollars, a skull fragment the size of a 20 cent piece was shown in court. Forward, a former lineman, says an electrical incident caused clothing and hair to ignite and a 31 foot fall, injuring his skull and burning him. Shoes burned inside and out will also be shown.
The house on Thursday failed to pass the near beer bill by lack of a constitutional majority. The vote stood 43 to 37, leaving the measure short of approval and delaying a statewide prohibition step.
The second Sunday baseball bill passed the Senate 26 to 19 and will become law without Gov. Marshall's signature. Burglars broke into the home of Mrs. E. N. Richards at 93 N. Pennsylvania Street within the last three days, and took china dishes bed clothing and other articles. The theft was found by Mrs Richards daughter when she visited Thursday. Richards is in New York.
London reports say the King and Queen did not depart for Biarritz as planned due to severe storms. Manila notes show street railway workers striking over higher pay and longer hours. London health officials claim much American meat shipped to England is spoiled. Servia replies to Russia on Balkan settlement terms. Roosevelt may return home by leg power if storms subside. Long Island reports heavy snow drifts near Oyster Bay.
Determined allies push a bill through the Indiana legislature to release Harry Brunaugh from prison pending his appeal to the supreme court. The measure passes the senate 27 to 7 over Governor Marshall’s veto as backers seek to ease bail for other convicts. Brunaugh, tied to Western Construction, was jailed for submitting false claims to Indianapolis for asphalt street work.
