A deadly tremor strikes Smyrna causing heavy casualties including 200 KIS fatalities and triggering a major disaster response. Concurrently a landslide in Italy adds to regional distress with unknown further losses.
Reports from Smyrna say 200 killed or maimed as Masran near Jerusalem is leveled and survivors camp on plains. In Italy a Tassel landslide crushes thirteen and buries homes as troops rush to the scene.
In police court on Wednesday Otto Nelson who ran the Capitol Lumber yard faced grand jury action after admitting he sold a carload of lumber and kept the money. Firm members testified they settled, but Judge Whalton ordered Nelson held on a $1000 bond as detectives traced missing lumber. Nelson, who lives at 2055 Catherine Street, confessed to Capt. Manning after theft concerns arose.
The Sunday baseball bill, crafted to fit the constitution, was advanced to third reading in the Senate under suspend rules by a 35 to 8 vote. Opponents delay the fight to seek amendments or defeat. If votes hold, the previous question gag may be used and the bill rushed to passage. Another day will bring a final vote.
Two senators altered their votes from no to yes to rescue Senator Durre's cent gas bill in Evansville. With two votes needed, the measure was saved as the title was changed and the emergency clause dropped.

Washington March 3 It is customary for the senate president to receive a distinctive inkstand paid for by the senate. Vice-President Fairbanks four years ago ordered a silver inkstand from a New York silversmith for 500 dollars. Today he sent a 200 dollar check to the senate clerk to apply as part payment for that inkstand, a move that drew much comment from some senators.
Sheriff Woessner designated James Parsons as deputy sheriff to replace William Lewis who moves to deputy clerk under Mr. Quill. Parsons is from the south side and well known among south side Democrats.
William Loeb Jr has an apartment at the Belle Claire hotel and friends say he will become collector of the port of New York within days. Edward S Fowler is named for possible removal, with Taft to nominate a successor to the Senate.
Madison March 3.2 Isaac Stephenson received two votes in the senatorial ballot at noon according to early results. The brief notice records a rear election move in Wisconsin with Stephenson as the candidate.

Nellie Jenkins an 18 year old from West Indianapolis was arrested for stealing a pair of shoes from her aunt Mrs. Elien Puckett. Juvenile court heard she was turned adrift at age 12 after her father deserted the family. Judge Stubbs ordered detention at the home until a suitable placement is found.
Henry Fleming, a colored city employee, was arrested by Dog Catcher Haynes for laughing at an attempt to net an elusive dog. Police Judge Whallon discharged Fleming, who said he boarded a street car near Sumner league on N Senate avenue and joined others in laughing at the dog's antics.
In Baltimore Slope mine near Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania a fire trapped fifteen miners as the morning shift began. One man died and fourteen others remain cut off from the shaft while relief teams fight the blaze and attempt rescues.
Bert Bowen ran from the dwelling of William Shellhouse at 2317 North Jersey Street. Neighbors described him to police, leading to his arrest. Bowen is charged with burglary and grand larceny for taking rings jewelry and other trinkets.
Santa Fe March 3 Governor Miguel Antonio Otero of New Mexico is critically ill with pneumonia after a nine year term. He was born in 1858 in Las Cruces and has been a leading state figure.
