Fire Destroys Furniture Store as Basemen t Fire Rages and Water Tower Is Used

A Cincinnati area furniture establishment saw its basement blaze quickly spread to the first floor after smoke filled the building on Washington and Delaware streets. Fire Chief Garrett had the water tower used to flood the basement, stopping the flames which originated from stored cotton and packing materials. Damage to stock was extensive though insured. one junior partner and a claim of blood poisoning were noted. Separately, editor James B. Wilson of the People began a two year sentence at Michigan City after being convicted of mailing obscene material. A Covington minister Rev J A Lee was accused of offering to obtain a confession from Scott Jackson for 3000 dollars, a proposition witnessed multiple times by reporters.

Land condemnation for pine lines passes vote defeat of donation

The right to condemn land for pine lines also passed. At Monday afternoon's session the proposition to donate Mrs Edwin May the $5 000 claimed by her husband architect of the prison north was defeated. The house passed the appropriation bill with democrats voting solidly against it. A bill creating separate judicial districts for Jay and Adams counties survived the governor's veto and became law. The senate Monday afternoon defeated the township trustee bill 26 to 1.

Park Buy and Bond Plan Dominate City Council Meeting

The Indianapolis council approved a 300000 park land purchase budget and a 56000 labor fund, plus authorizing a 350000 loan for a new park system. It also endorsed park improvements for unemployed residents, and rejected Payne’s plan for summer Sunday band concerts by a 14 to 5 vote. Thearrested Shaffer-Feibleman bribery case was deemed unproven, with Feibleman’s involvement referred to the grand jury for possible further inquiry.

The Board of Trade withdraws its resignation from the National board. Western boards are to receive more recognition. The local board had resigned earlier, but its work on the monetary conference prompted the National board to appoint a special committee to urge the Indianapolis board to rescind its action.

City collects first semi annual pay from Central Union

Board of Works rejects sprinkling on several streets

The Board of Works overruled remonstrances against sprinkling on Pine Street from Meek to the C and Meek from Noble to Dillon, Missouri from Market to Washington, and Michigan from Keystone towards Rural with Teastern to Rural exempted. Leota from Bates to Big Four and Spruce from Prospect to Orange were sustained. Spruce Street upset many residents and School Commissioner Adam protested the section near Spruce Street School, but the remonstrance was upheld.

McKinley Arrives in Washington for Inauguration

President elect McKinley and his party arrived in Washington from Ohio and were driven to the Eb bitt House amid cheering crowds and bright spring weather. He greeted supporters from a car window along the way and retired to the Eb bitt for rest, with no military display at arrival.
