From Portland report: a cloudburst at Heppner Oregon on June 15 left 350 to 500 people dead or missing with over 100 bodies recovered and authorities seeking to confirm the final toll as rescue work continues.
Supt. Charles McFarland of the Goddard Society was shot dead in front of the criminal court building by William Stenzer under alias William Rogtra. Stenzer, indicted earlier in connection with a policy shop, claimed McFarland had dogged his steps for seven weeks. Philip Bilary, an employee of the society, was wounded in the left arm. Stenzer was arrested immediately. The Goddard Society is described as a reform group.
The June 15 gathering in Scranton gathers miners from anthracite regions led by President Mitchell to resolve price increases and wage disputes. Delegates face possible endorsement of Nichols Cetlery and Fahey as district representatives, and may authorize a general strike if editors refuse wage recognition.
