Mayor Bookwalter outlined his stance on interurban freight in a Saturday interview. He opposed rapid freight expansion downtown, favored night shipments, and suggested a freight belt outside the city if needed, while stressing no discriminatory policies against Indianapolis.
In Vincennes Indiana a crowd fears lynching of ex convict Bill Edson after he is accused of abducting four year old Irma Pfohl from her home with candy. The child lies in critical condition and officials face pressure to protect the jail from mob violence as threats spread from North Vernon and local frustration rises.
In Philadelphia on Saturday around 1 a.m., thieves robbed Broad Street Methodist Episcopal Church and set the pulpit fire to hide their crime. They stole silver communion items and contents of collection boxes, causing about 2000 or more in damage before the blaze was extinguished. Revival services are announced for Saturday night and Sunday at 2 and 7 20 at a tent on Germantown Avenue.
A death and wedding occurred in the Harvey household at Oceanic New Jersey over three days. Mrs Lydia Harvey aged 73 died suddenly from a kidney ailment after telling her daughter Jessie not to delay the wedding. The marriage went ahead with Rev S W S AIpe officiating. The groom is Heiney Hickey of Henconville New York.
Cyrus J Clark slowly improves at his home after illness. Physicians believe he will soon be able to be out. He is the Republican nominee for county auditor and a well known politician.
Eastern Nebraska suffered severe flooding after a Saturday storm, with two inches of rain in a half hour and rivers rising along small streams near Omaha. In Omaha stockyards three thousand hogs faced drowning risk, but most were saved, leaving about fifty lost.
In Emporia and surrounding areas rain wanes and the Cottonwood and Neosha rivers drop several feet. Train service is restored except for the Santa Fe Howard Branch. Families including Henry Dailey Alfred Sills Ernest Wilhite and three others are rescued from flooded farms by boat. Widespread crop and property damage reported with ruined miles of fields and damaged tracks bridges and buildings.
A quoted citizen named Allison plans to ask Councilman Billingsly to present a proposal to curb automobilist risk, similar to a New York state ordinance claimed to work well. In Newark Ohio a stool left by Washington Moore decades ago yielded $500 in banknotes and gold from a cushion found with a note praising Miss Long for kindness.
After lengthy talks the Daughters of the Confederacy plan a memorial for Mrs Davis despite her wishes. A four member committee travels to New York to discuss honoring Jefferson Davis with a triumphal arch. Mrs Davis opposes the arch as suitable for a defeated leader.
A Duluth message reports a harbor collision Saturday morning between the whaleback Wilson and the steamer Hadley. The Wilson sank with losses of its crew. the Hadley was beached with a badly damaged prow. Each vessel valued at 75000 dollars. The Hadley carried coal from Cleveland to Duluth. the Wilson carried ore.
Announced Saturday that Charles Maguire is permanently appointed a member of the Board of Public Works. A former Taggart appointee, he remains in Bookwalter's administration with a $5,000 bond furnished by Sterling R. Holt and James L. Keach. The admission draws praise from City Hall Republicans as Maguire is a true Democrat and former mayoral opponent in the last city election.
In Hammonton William Dix, a Jersey Central freight worker, was crushed under a locomotive when his foot was caught. The engine passed over him, severing his right leg, then a railroad torpedo he carried exploded, tearing a hole in his back. Dix, dying, said it was his own fault and bid farewell to the crew.
Partly cloudy with local thunderstorms for Saturday afternoon and night and Sunday. Cooler temperatures expected with lows near the u.s. 60s and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Northerly winds. temperatures reported around noon and 2 pm.
Chicago June 7 union meat cutters discharged for joining a labor union were notified they will be reinstated by Monday. A warning attached implied a strike by all but other yard staff if reinstatement is not granted, risking a complete tie up of the yards and escalating labor unrest.
Dr A J Mullan of 1687 Bellefontaine St and W Ben Grimen of 322 N California Ave were hurt when a west bound street car 640 collided with an east bound car 542 at Washington and Illinois streets Saturday noon. Mullan sprained his left wrist and broke a small bone, Grimen suffered a spinal concussion, but no bones were broken. Motorman O Worrell of car 640 was cut by flying glass. he resumed work after treatment. The east bound car took a switch north into Illinois, causing the crash. both cars continued their routes with minor injuries to others.
Henry Wemming and his wife were awakened at 2 a.m. by about 50 masked men who seized Demming and dragged his wife from their home in night clothes. The couple were whipped in the face and head. their son allegedly was whipped and told to leave the country. Demming reports his wife is in serious condition. he can only walk. He identifies two assailants.
Secretary Hurty of the State health board returned Friday night from a tour of the Ohio river counties where he discussed health measures and reviewed local conditions.
State geologist Blatchley returns from tours in Morgan Brown Johnson and Monroe counties reporting rich gold in lowland soils along stream valleys. He estimates a 180 square mile area where washing soil could yield 50 cents per cubic yard, with machinery potentially profitable. Gold traces found near Logansport.
In Philadelphia on Friday night Hattie Loftus 37 a patient at the Methodist Hospital exhibited acute mania for bloodletting. She seized a knife from secreted weapons, rushed the ward brandishing the blade and threatened others. Nurses subdued her. she was placed in a straight jacket as Supt Edwards notes the condition.
Attorney-general Tayton was notified that the U S Supreme Court granted his motion to advance the case against an Indiana manufacturing company over the Fight to tax patents. Hearing set for Oct. 20. The company had enjoined Marion county officials from listing patent values for tax. The state won at trial and this is the company's appeal. Normally a hearing would take three years.
About 175 members of the Indianapolis Musikverein and some 25 others joined a Saturday excursion to St Louis on the Big Four special. The group will be hosted by the Liederkranz, a historic German singing society, and most will return via Vandalia at 8 15 a.m. Monday.
ST. LOUIS June 17 Edward Butler a noted political boss faces indictment for alleged attempts to bribe members of the Board of Health in connection with city matters. Proceedings move to change of venue as case proceeds.
James Moriarity, Democratic leader on the city council, says there is no truth to claims that Democrats block appropriations in retaliation for Republican delays. The pesthouse ordinance to be introduced Monday would place the pesthouse three quarters of a mile from the city limits, and Moriarity expects Democratic support.
The Young Buffaloes defeated the Young Bungaloes on Walnut Street grounds Saturday morning by 22 to 13. Batteries: Bruder, Stephens and Sloan, Spalding and Claypool. The Young Owls beat the B. C. W. Co. team at Meridian Street grounds Saturday 17 to 1. Batteries: O’Neil and Kirkhoff, Smith and Green.
