Washington reports vary on Schley action at Santiago harbor with tales of torpedo boats and heavy ships firing on Morro and nearby fortifications. Americans reportedly fought off shore while questions linger over Comodore Schley and the status of cable links to Haiti and Madrid.
In the Mosquito fleet action at Tangas Harbor on Monday the Uneasant Leyden destroyed a Spanish block fort built atop the former site. Gunboats opened fire at noon, the fort answered once, then abandoned. Reports say shells from the small ships leveled the fort and several soldiers died. Government dispatch boat says the blockade area is quiet. The Santiago engagement story is doubted locally.
Key West reports the converted yacht Wasp, once a New York tug, slipped past forts and mines near Santiago harbor last Wednesday night. Under full steam she surveyed the harbor, found three Spanish cruisers, and returned undetected. The ships were believed to be part of Cervera's fleet.
Washington June 1 navy department stated at 1030 Wednesday morning that nothing had been received from Commodore Schiey on any dispatch or signal.
