Reports from Siboney reveal a renewed bombardment of Santiago beginning at 6 a.m. with land batteries and naval gunfire as Gen. Shafter orders precise targeting and intervals. By noon Maj. Noble seeks surrender while Gen. Miles inspects, and surrounded Spanish defenses show no escape as U.S. and Cuban forces tighten siege.
Two hundred thirty five wounded officers and men from Santiago arrived at Fort McPherson to be admitted to the general hospital on Monday. They report the Cherokee, which sailed from Siboney with lights out to avoid detection, was fired on by the Scorpion of the American navy before its identity was known. The Cherokee was hit several times but was later hailed by another vessel and not fired upon again.
Wires from Hayti are clogged delaying news as a general bombardment begins. At 9 35 a m Monday the battleship Indiana and cruisers New York and Brooklyn shell the city from beyond six miles. Large eight and ten inch shells cause terrible destruction amid the chaotic fire.
Washington July 12 The war department received word that Santiago is surrounded on the north line by Gen Ludlow and Gen Henry. A flag of truce has been up since 2 pm with surrender discussions under way. Casualties are low and relief efforts continue as officers anticipate an unconditional surrender.
An explosion of gas in the Cleveland water works tunnel on Monday night killed 11 brick masons and assistants. Rescue attempts were hindered by foul air. bodies lie 112 feet below the lake. Sparks from a short circuiting light wire are blamed for the blast.

Naval orders confirm Commodore Watsons fleet will sail to Spain to meet Camaras squadron. Massachusetts replaces Iowa in the squadron and officers are to report promptly. A naval officer says the fleet should sail Tuesday or Wednesday to intercept Camaras fleet in the Mediterranean or threaten the Spanish coast to provoke battle.
The British steamer Pollock arrives from Porto Rico with sugar and cargo. Passengers say locals await the American army of invasion, expecting little fighting to seize the island. Spanish forces about 7,400 and volunteers 5,000 concentrate near the capital. six miles off San Juan, Yosemite stops the Pollock for papers check.
The Boston post office handled 18000 letters from Santiago bound troops, brought by the St. Louis and sorted from Portsmouth. About half lacked stamps and will be rushed to destinations. A soldier in New York noted on his envelope that Spaniards would not sell stamps.
London dispatch notes Sagasta proposes resignation to Queen Victoria as military faction blocks peace talks. Prediction that a war cabinet will fail and Sagasta may return to power to negotiate peace. Antwerp reports Spanish auxiliary cruiser Ciudad de Cadiz arriving after a month at sea.
Forecast for Indianapolis and vicinity for 86 hours ending Tuesday afternoon calls for fair weather with Tuesday night and Wednesday. Early readings show 62 degrees at 7 a.m. and 78 degrees at noon, rising to 80 or higher by 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Reading Pa July 12 Sergeant Reuther reports Private Francis Hartman and a stranger named Hartman discover they are from Reading and are brothers after 18 years apart. The other item notes Lieut Whitsell of the navy receiving a midnight dispatch mocking Dewey.
Frank B. Kinney and Isaac Barber, both connected to 829 North Delaware Street, are arrested on theft charges for taking a trunk found behind the post office. The trunk owner formerly roomed with Kinney and later enlisted. Barber says Kinney hired him to remove the trunk, assuming it was Kinney’s. They will be tried in police court Thursday.
Phil H. Sheridan W R C will host a lawn fete at Mrs. C B Oakes residence 3104 West Illinois Street on Wednesday afternoon June 18 from 2 to 8 o clock. Proceeds go to the war emergency fund for the benefit of soldiers.
Myron 8. Canady an 18 year old boy was badly hurt by a fall from a street car at Central avenue and Seventeenth street and was taken to his home in New Castle Monday night.
C H Walcott of 142 North Pennsylvania Street promotes acetylene gas as a safer and easier alternative to coal oil for lighting homes and stores, claiming it reduces lighting troubles and hazards.
