A three member labor committee met Manager Coen who refused the increase and warned replacements could be hired. Pickets now guard entrances as the company monitors strikers. Treasurer W V Martin said the strike began Thursday and Coen, returning Friday, refused to pay more and would hire new men. We do not anticipate trouble.

Vernon Indiana July 9 Judge Jeptha D New longtime legal figure and Democratic nominee for the third district supreme court killed himself Saturday morning while temporarily insane. He had suffered from stomach troubles, insomnia, and nervous prostration, and was under medical care. New was born 1830 in Vernon and held multiple public posts including congressman and appellate judge before returning to law practice. He was married to Sallie Butler and had three children. The death was reported by Attorney General Smith via telegram from Lincoln Dixon North Vernon.
A stone wall 800 feet long and up to 26 feet high collapsed at the Newport News Mississippi Valley depot on Friday afternoon, smashing six cars and killing three people, J. K. Hunter and Sam Bell, both railroad employees. Conductor Hogan is missing. Loss estimated at $65,000.
The 14 year old son of Captain J E Bodine of 943 I New Jersey Street drowned while bathing with companions near Fail Creek by the new bridge on Twenty second Street. He went under in about 20 feet of water as rescuers and his father arrived. Fisher and Buchanan’s ambulance was summoned and a search for the body continued past 2 pm with no recovery yet.
Friday night Chas Carney the burglar arrested Thursday night for breaking into Wm Moss and Ehrmanns hardware store named David Monahan and Edward Francis in the job to screen his own guilt. Officers found Monahan at his Shelby street home and confronted Carney in police court Saturday morning. Carney admitted being the wrong man. Francis could not be found and it is believed Carney sought to shift blame to others.
That section of the Midland railroad between Brazil and Carbon was sold at sheriff's sale on Saturday to satisfy 81 judgments for labor and materials. The bid of 1500 dollars by the claimants' attorney partially satisfied the claims, and the buyers plan to market the iron.
Detective Stiples of the Pinkerton agency arrived in Wabash Indiana on Saturday with the body of J W Kline the Pinkerton superintendent who was shot in the head during the Homestead mill workers attack. The burial is planned for Sunday at the home of John Talmage whose adopted son Kline was.

In the senate a claim by Mrs Jessie Benton Fremont against land in San Francisco was referred to the court of claims.
About 8000 attended the opening prayer meeting at Madison Square Garden led by E Soler of Portland. Rev Josian Strong and Rev H C Mabie spoke on Christian endeavor and foreign missions. Afternoon junior rallies and denominational gatherings followed. Montreal to host the 1893 convention.
