Unusual Fourth of July Boss Hosts Farewell at Blackwell

Wichita Kas July 8 The town of Blackwell Oklahoma staged a peculiar Fourth of July event as Col Blackwell, owner of most of the town, paid railroad fares to bring friends from across the territory to gather near his planned grave. He unveiled his monument and read his will, bequeathing much of his estate to charities while sending $200 to miners’ families in Pennsylvania. His coal interests clash with the coal trust, and he promotes low coal prices.
