Oil Explosion Burns Two Men at Queensware Store
Two employees of F. P. Smith & Co. suffered severe burns when a kerosene tank exploded in the basement of the Market street store. Walter Latham, about 25 and living at Camp Street, sustained serious head and hand injuries, while Newton McCormack had singed hair and eyebrows and eye burns. Firefighters prevented a larger disaster as several oil tanks filled with kerosene were nearby. The men escaped possible death by a narrow margin and sought medical aid unsuccessfully before treatment. Insurance coverage for the loss is noted.
