Democratic leaders praise the legislature as it settles to business ten days in, with six candidates for the senatorial toga rivaling for the post. A potential deadlock over the choice has eased as Democrats remain in caucus until a senator is chosen, allowing both houses to organize and proceed with lawmaking.
Ray Sheffler a 21 year old alleged soap seller praised as visiting from Pennsylvania was arrested on Washington street by Detectives Simon and Smith. He reportedly traveled the country for two years taking orders for undelivered soap and offered a 50 cake lot plus 37 piece china set for $2 with half paid in advance.
An incorrect routing of Indiana’s Taft electors certificate caused a delay as the certified copy failed to reach the Senate president. The misdirected copy was returned, a corrected copy was placed in Gov. Marshall’s safe, and a messenger prepared to forward it to the proper address. The third copy arrived with the federal court judge, but the inauguration proceeds as planned.
Gov. Marshall signed the appropriation bill setting aside 115000 for the expenses of the sixty sixth legislative session. Legislative employees and members received their first pay on Friday and Saturday as many lawmakers left the capital to return home until Monday when the session will resume. A. Ga. He says well maintained basics in writing and arithmetic give rail workers an edge, and that initial progress favors high school graduates who later catch up with college graduates. The South Range Gas Light and Coke plant near Houghton Michigan was practically destroyed by an early morning explosion. John Bey will be permitted to sell liquor at retail at Maryland and West streets for another year. A retail liquor license was granted him Saturday by the commissioners. Commissioners Mendenhall and Roberts voted for the license while Commissioner Von Hake opposed.
Dr. J. F. Callen editor of the Kansan Pittsburg Kansas is in the city. He formerly worked in Indianapolis and still owns property there.
A Denver & Rio Grande crash near Detsero Colorado left fifty believed dead and thirty injured after passenger train No 5 collided with freight No 66. The list includes Gus Olsen and Thomas Saldwell among the dead with many injured and a single unhurt woman wandering in the snow. Further details follow.
John A. Moffatt of the United Hatters of North America warned that nearly 20,000 on strike could halt US hat production within days if union demands are not met. He said the fight over the union label, dropped by Associated Hat Manufacturers, signals a broad labor-label battle with AFL backing a nationwide conference of unions to plan an indefinite campaign.

In Pittsburgh Pa on January 16 in U S district court Judge James B Young suspended the sentence for R K Hinsem president of Mt Pleasant Farmers and Merchants National Bank. He was convicted of misappropriation of bank funds and, at 67, doctors testified confinement would shorten his life. The case was continued to the May term.
Harvey Taylor pled guilty in criminal court to assault and battery against his wife. He was fined $10 and sentenced to ten days in the workhouse. Attorneys McCray and Lott caused a disturbance in the courtroom, prompting the judge to remark on possible arrest.
In Indianapolis a judge voided the marriage of Elma Dare and George Rhodius declaring Rhodius mentally incompetent at the time of marriage. The guardianship of Rhodius’ half million estate is upheld, with property managed as if the ceremony never occurred. The ruling cites fraud and unsound mind from Jan 2 1907 to the present.
Ralph McGuire, a small boy, climbed a Big Four locomotive in Indianapolis yards two weeks ago, pulled the lever, and derailed freight cars. In juvenile court Saturday, he was sent toward the Hanly home near Plainfield for incorrigibility as his parents are deaf and he has roamed the city. Also, John Heinrich Jacob Hossman and Everett Bolden were committed to the State School for Boys at Plainfield.
New York dated January 16 reports that Capt Peter C Hains Jr will be tried for murder in the first degree. Officials confirm intention to proceed with the case as announced in today’s dispatch.
Sheriff Thomas Box of Lawrence county, charged with manslaughter in the Barrett shooting, appeared in police court Saturday as a hearing was postponed to January 2. The grand jury and coroner investigations delay the case. Box was released on a $4,000 bond posted by nine sheriffs. Barrett’s relatives dispute the authorities’ statements and expect new witnesses before the grand jury. Captain Bray defends police impartiality.
Realizing her mind was failing from ill health Minnie Wrade 37 drank carbolic acid and died at 3 am at 1841 Napoleon Street. Husband Christian Wrade awoke to find her body on the kitchen floor with the bottle nearby. She had become increasingly convinced her mind was deteriorating and had sought a physician’s help several days earlier.
