The Indiana Democratic caucus nears as Kern fights to secure 42 votes amid a field of minor candidates. Opponents warn a bandwagon rush is unlikely without patronage, arguing no candidate gains advantage from plum appointments, while Kern remains a leading first ballot vote winner.
The confession of Rev. H. J. Carmichael who murdered Gideon Browning in his Michigan church and killed himself in Carthage is read by County Judge E. C. James. He cites cowardice and hypnotism as motives and Sheriff Bertschi searches for 185 dollars Carmichael said he had on his person. He laments failing to act bravely and asks that money be sent to his wife.
Peter Chellens a saloon keeper living on Painée Street was arrested for violating the diphtheria quarantine while still under orders. He allegedly permitted patrons to enter the saloon during the quarantine period.
Sheriff Thomas W. Box of Lawrence County says he fired twice in self defense when attacked by Martin E. Barrett after Barrett was ejected from M. J. Mannix’s saloon. Barrett died later at St. Vincent’s hospital while Box remained in police headquarters under guard. The incident, witnessed by several and under coroner and grand jury scrutiny, sparked bond offers but detention continues.
Reverend Day, pastor of the Home Presbyterian Church, will conduct the evening service tonight. Parishioners are invited to attend as prayers and sermon reflect current spiritual priorities.
Frank Jones and Hattie Johnson, both colored, charged with contributing to the delinquency of children for organizing colored boys and girls under 16 into a club to buy and drink beer. About 20 members appeared before Judge Stubbs. boy members were assessed ten cents weekly for beer. Morals allegations cited as the youths met in the clubroom.
Frank Donnelly, 56, killed his wife with a revolver at Oxford Ohio, then shot himself and slashed his throat and wrists with a razor. He walked to Hamilton, 16 miles away, is dying at Mercy hospital.

John F. McIntyre urged jurors to spare T Jenkins Hains, claiming Capt Peter Conover Hains was driven mad by his wife’s alleged affair with William Annis. He described the killer as a man undone by grief and said no case had proved innocence beyond reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Darrin argued for conviction. Mrs Annis attended the session.
A $600000 city of Indianapolis bond issue for a city hall at Ohio and Alabama Streets sold Tuesday to Miller Adams & Co Indianapolis Breed & Harrison Cincinnati and E H Rollins & Son Chicago. They paid a $423 premium for the entire issue of 1000 bonds at $6000 each with 3 percent interest payable semi annually.
Dr Henry L Goodman medical attendant to the Board of Health killed himself at his Brunswick Apartments home in New York City by swallowing carbolic acid. He had suffered acute heart trouble for months and faced a $25000 suit brought against him.
A large northwest coast quake struck near Puget Sound and Vancouver Island, with Seattle and Bellingham reporting shocks. Bellingham brick blocks and other structures showed damage risk while Tacoma and Everett felt tremors. Duration ranged from seconds to a quarter minute with widespread alarm.
In Huntington West Virginia on January 12 an explosion at Pocahontas Consolidated Collieries Lick branch mine at Switchback on the Norfolk and Western line entombed about 100 miners, with 50 killed in a previous explosion two weeks earlier.
