Substitutes for Indianapolis Justices of the Peace
A proposed bill would let township justices appoint substitutes when unable to hold court with the substitutes paid by the justices. Current law requires daily in court presence except Sundays and holidays. The bill targets townships containing a city of 1000+ population per the last census. It would allow appointing an attorney as substitute. Also considered is providing quarters for justices. The 1899 law assigns county commissioners to designate court locations for townships with very large city populations, which the justices interpret as rent paid by counties. Marion County has not designated court venues.
