Herman Russ of 418 Louisiana Street was injured near Shelby when he jumped from the engine as he saw a freight train ahead while the Monon passenger train ran at full speed. Fireman Chas Duseh leaped onto the tender and averted a possible wreck. Russ's telegram said injuries were not serious and he would be brought to Indianapolis.
George Edgar Vincent a sociology professor at Chicago University and head of the Chautauqua educational system is named as the likely president of DePauw University Greencastle with a salary of 7 dollars annually. The board plans merge of president and chancellor roles and may install Henry B Longden as dean of the college of liberal arts.
Miss Et ta Alldredge of Blount county released five prisoners from the county jail at Uncota Sunday night and eloped with one, Matren Murphy, charged with seduction, while Sheriff Alldredge was away. Murphy is believed to be the eloped partner. Lewis Gurley, charged with murder, remained at large. No trace of the parties has been found.
State treasurer Levy announced a large payment of 401,000 to Winslow, Lanter & Co. toward reducing the state debt. The balance after past payments stood at 2,787,615.12, with 200,000 more reduced by this latest sum. Nat Hill will assume office soon as successor. Engineer Frank Gammill of Chicago was killed in a head on collision between two Northwest en freight trains near Eden, Fondulac, Wis.

William Coffelt, alias Michael Foley, a suspected grave robber, was deceived into visiting Cantrell at the county jail Sunday afternoon and was arrested as he threatened to talk. Detectives Mantung Lancaster and Kurtz, with Cantrell, accused him of disturbing graves and attempting to sell a corpse, while Coffet denied knowledge of the alleged bodies.
The diamond ring of Mrs. J. H. Lowe treasurer of the Flower Mission disappeared from the toilet room at YWCA rooms on N Pennsylvania Ave. valued at over 32, it cannot be duplicated. Mrs Lowe left both rings Friday afternoon and later found the emerald ring. the diamond ring was gone with no clue to the thief.
