Children rehearsing for a New Year celebration suffered injuries when a gasoline lamp exploded, starting a blaze that burned several others. Firefighters responded quickly to contain the flames and aid victims, with no fatalities reported.
Big Four engineer Charles Gilkison was trapped under a wrecked box car after a mogul engine jumped the track near the Belt railroad. His right leg was crushed below the knee and he was taken to St Vincent's hospital in Indianapolis. Fireman A J Bell was injured but escaped. The accident damaged two box cars and tore track for about 200 yards. Gilkison lived at 2625 Station Street Brightwood.
County officials face questions that the assessor printing contracts exceed the $250 appropriation by $24.08, risking a possible challenge to the Levey Brothers & Co and Sentinel Printing deals. County Attorney says the overage is minor and unlikely to void the bids, while labor complaints and questions about nonunion work keep pressure on the process.
Not guilty verdict returned for Thomas Chamales proprietor of the Savoy saloon and restaurant in a second trial by the Chicago Law and Order League for keeping the saloon open on Sunday. In Monterey near North Judson Indiana two 15 year old girls Clara Kammel and Margaret Fox were killed when a gasoline lamp exploded during a rehearsal for New Year’s Eve. Sisters and other students suffered burns while rescuers saved the two room schoolhouse with a bucket brigade.
Dr. Henry Jameson of the Picard of Public Parks proposed a 25 year boulevard and park system for Indianapolis to achieve uniformity. The board agreed to draft a plat showing current and past work, then develop more definite future plans.
Andrew Copeland, 54, living with his brother in law Samuel Barring, tried to take his life Friday morning with a razor but missed major vessels. Ill for months and facing domestic troubles, he was found by his brother in law and removed to the city hospital. Dr H A Schneider attended him and officers were sent to the scene.
The county board of finance met at the county commissioners office Friday afternoon to consider apportioning county funds to banks and trust companies under the new depository law. Allocation will follow the financial condition of applicants seeking funds.
The Board of Public Works received bids for sweeping and ashes collection. Indianapolis Sanitary Company bid 9400 for sweepings while Marion County Construction Company bid 21.00. For ashes and sweepings Gemmer Henry 3400, Indianapolis Sanitary 21200, Marion County Construction 34000. The board will discuss funding with City Controller Breunig before further consideration.
The Board of Public Park Commissioners on Friday decided to install additional lights along Fall Creek Boulevard opposite street intersections. They will move lights from the centers of squares and purchase about three more. The aim is to prevent accidents from vehicles driving into Fall Creek on dark nights.

Vere Goold and wife now share meals as authorities show leniency toward Emma Levin’s murderers. Niece Girodia, central in the trial, visits and is denounced by Mme Goold who vows to appeal for absolution.
W. J. Bryan writes Willis S. Thompson of the Indianapolis Sun to thank the paper for its generous support. He says he will speak at a YMCA meeting in Indianapolis on February 16 and looks forward to meeting and thanking Thompson in person. The letter is dated December 22 at Tinoco Neb. and signed by Bryan.
Boston dispatch reports a Watertown fire early today killed five people. John Clark, his wife, and three children John St Philip and Doris two, perished as flames spread through their home. Firemen found two boys and the father quickly, with Mrs Clark and the infant Doris recovered later.
August Folia, who recently rose to prominence by alleging two Indianapolis attorneys told foreigners they could avoid arrest for health law violations, was arrested Friday by Patrolman Oakey. He faces charges of loitering and petit larceny.
John Reinhardt, an aged German, was sent to the grand jury from police court Friday, charged with forgery. The only witness against him was Mrs. Anna Yates, currently under arrest for forging her husband's name on various notes.
Henry W Klausmann county surveyor began concrete bridge plans over Fall creek at Capitol avenue with $100 000 county appropriation. He told Fork County Commissioners that extending Fall Creek Boulevard past Capital Ave could affect bridge approaches. C Fr Coffin president of the board said boulevard extension may occur.
D. Davis, a well known Baltimore liquor dealer, was tried in criminal court on a charge of selling liquor to John McGrath, 17. Davis was fined and costs in police court and appealed the case. Special Judge Charles Wiltsie took the case under advisement. Also, ex Gov Jackson of Maryland died today in Baltimore on December 27.
Unofficial returns indicate a strong majority of United Mine Workers districts backing T. L. Lewis of Bridgeport Ohio as John Mitchell’s successor. Results, due January 21 at Indianapolis, show Lewis carrying most districts, with Illinois locals reporting about 6,069 votes for Lewis and 2,000 for Wilson in two locals.
